Hubble (2010) Laremy Legel See Hubble 3D: IMAX if you get the opportunity. Take the children. It's a beautiful film, and it somehow makes the cosmos seem both accessible and heavenly. You'll definitely learn a few things, and you'll gain a new appreciation for our space program.

A-
Cell 211 (2009) Christine Champ Director/co-writer Daniel Monzon does danger, and violence, with an almost delicate hand -- relying on tense realism and visceral fear rather than gratuitous gore.

Transsiberian (2008) Alyssa Vitrano Thumbs up for well-crafted suspense and some interesting plot turns I didn't see coming.

Holy Motors (2012) William Goss Holy Motors stands as one of the most delightfully enigmatic movies to come around in quite some time.

Man of Steel (2013) Chase Whale Henry Cavill breathes new life into the Man of Steel, the most realistic version of Superman we are going to ever get.
Posted Jun 22, 2019Edit critic review
Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) Eric D. Snider It's a cheerfully stupid endeavor.

Across the Universe (2007) Dre Rivas If you're willing to love it, you let an ambitious film like this in and you let its faults grow on you. All you need is love indeed.

Frankie and Johnny (1991) Teo Bugbee This is what a romantic comedy looks like when it's being built on scar tissue.

Grave of the Fireflies (1988) Charles Webb This film isn't easy to watch but it's essential viewing among the great works of animation--or really of all film, for that matter.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Twins of Evil (1971) Charles Webb ...an unashamedly sexy, luridly violent, and well-produced horror movie shot with actors who weren't especially embarrassed to be a part of the bloody happenings on screen.

Jack and Diane (2012) Charles Webb There's a wise (and frightening) movie about young love in Jack and Diane, but Bradley Rust Gray didn't make it.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Deadly Blessing (1981) Charles Webb On paper, a slasher-thriller with supernatural overtones, Deadly Blessing is instead a series of loosely connected parts.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Frankenweenie (2012) Charles Webb Why does Frankenweenie 2012 feel so incomplete and cobbled together with loose ideas?
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
House at the End of the Street (2012) Charles Webb That's essentially what this movie is: ugly. It's characters are deeply unpleasant.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Spaceballs (1987) Charles Webb Spaceballs remains a funny enough movie on its own, even after all these years.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
V/H/S (2012) Charles Webb V/H/S could have been really, really good instead of just really, really interesting. As it stands, it's worth watching just to see the seeds of several very clever ideas emerge.

Tai Chi Zero (2012) Charles Webb Fun peppers his cast with Hong Kong action film royalty while filling the screen with crazy titles and text overlays, which almost distract from the problems with the way he and writer Chia-lu Chang have unfortunately structured their film.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space (1988) Charles Webb A far more interesting horror movie threat than they have any right to be, and that's all thanks to the cleverness of the Chiodo boys.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) Charles Webb This beautiful film, anchored by non-professional actors inside of a wrecked world, is one of the most wrenchingly wonderful fantasies of 2012.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Jeepers Creepers (2001) Charles Webb Jeepers Creepers still holds a lot of the power it did over a decade ago thanks in large part to its ability to morph and change styles during its brisk 90-minute running time.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
ParaNorman (2012) Charles Webb An original feature about tolerance and understanding that just happens to have ghosts, zombies, a vengeful witch, and some of the most gorgeous stop-motion work I've seen in a while.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Iron Sky (2012) Charles Webb Iron Sky's simplicity will either be the reason you seek it out or the reason you turn it off, but it executes on its concept with some accomplished effects for its low budget while living up to the promise of its premise.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) Charles Webb Thankfully, the sense of humor still holds and the lead characters are as sweet and dumb as ever. They mean well, they just don't have follow through--and we've all known that person.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Piranha 3DD (2012) Charles Webb Piranha 3DD fails to match the full-blown bloodbath of the first movie, and features too many callbacks to that film to really establish its own identity.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Flying Swords of Dragon Gate (2011) Charles Webb Relentlessly, impossibly improbable and fun.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Young Gun in the Time (2012) Charles Webb Between Young Gun's dedication and simple decency and Song-hyun's tough-headedness, you want to hang with these characters and see things turn out okay for them.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Terror Train (1980) Charles Webb Terror Train is at best workmanlike in its matter-of-fact killings and downright silly and nonsensical in the way the mystery and fake-outs are handled.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 (1986) Charles Webb Everything is heightened in Chainsaw 2, the gore gorier, the performances, broader, the music synth-ier.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
The Funhouse (1981) Charles Webb A terrific twist with its killer makes it one worth seeking out.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
From Beyond (1986) Charles Webb A melange of Lovecraftian influences [that] stands side-by-side with Re-Animator as one of the best films of Band's Empire International years.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Total Recall (2012) Charles Webb While the remake might not hold a candle to the 1990 interpretation of the material, it can stand on its own as a solid action movie.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Chicken With Plums (2011) Charles Webb A beautiful bummer, a deeply-felt and sumptuous movie...
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Wizards (1977) Charles Webb Bakshi is direct in his imagery and his messaging: the drumbeat of war and the rush of new technology is killing us...Wizards is far more than a simple animated curiosity, but a surprisingly dark, dangerous, and compelling piece of fantasy.

They Live (1988) Charles Webb We should really celebrate movies like this from Carpenter.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Death Valley (1982) Charles Webb Ultimately, Death Valley is a curiosity more interesting for its cast than anything actually on the screen.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Riddick (2013) Charles Webb Violent, strange, and with ever-escalating stakes, this is the definition of a well-crafted B-movie.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
I Declare War (2012) Charles Webb A visceral and clever battle of wits, the fracturing of friendships, and a look at the true cost of (make believe) war really is.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Detroit Metal City (2008) Charles Webb If you're a fan of the manga, DMC might be worth checking out. Just keep in mind that it exists in its own "realistic" world and therefore is coming from a different place than the truly rude and terrific source material.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Dredd (2012) Charles Webb Dredd knows its characters and world in a way that many adaptations do not and it blends them together with a not-overly-complicated narrative to deliver one of the best jolt-to-the-brain action movies of the last year.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) Charles Webb It's a movie about the widespread death and destruction via techno-magic and it's just a huge disappointment that it took years after its initial release for Halloween III to find an audience.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Brave (2012) Charles Webb Technically and talent-wise, Brave is a fine film and at any other studio would be an instant Oscar contender. At Pixar, it comes off as a first-pass on a much better, deeper film that has yet to manifest.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Storage 24 (2012) Charles Webb From a technical standpoint, it's a mixed bag while the stories and characters you're trapped with for an hour and a half offer nothing compelling.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Mutant Girls Squad (2010) Charles Webb Everyone involved knows what kinds of movies they're making here and simply seem to hope that the small audience for them appreciate the skin and violence on display.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
The Pirates! Band of Misfits (2012) Charles Webb If nothing else, I can say that Aardman's latest is one of the best-looking movies I've seen in 2012...Oh, and the movie also happens to be very funny, a spoof on Pirate pictures without getting all that much weighed down with pop culture.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Dick Tracy (1990) Charles Webb In spite of a stellar cast led by Beatty as the square-jawed cop, Dick Tracy never comes to life--it's the rough idea of a Dick Tracy movie, stiff, formless, and kind of dumb.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Dragon Age: Dawn of the Seeker (2012) Charles Webb I's hard to imagine die-hard Dragon Age fans flocking to this pretty generic fantasy action film for any reason and it's likewise tough to envision general fantasy fans gravitating towards this.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
I Come in Peace (1990) Charles Webb [It] moves along so quickly, you don't really get a chance to pay attention to the seams. It's just one fun section after the next (with the briefest of love scenes thrown in) before lurching towards another synth rock-scored moment of violence.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Space Battleship Yamato (2010) Charles Webb The whole thing is a mess: from conception, to tone, to aesthetics. Worse, Yamato never finds a valid reason to exist.
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
White Vengeance (2011) Charles Webb It's the kind of over-the-top spirit that kept me engaged and really into the movie, and it's a shame that it makes up such a relatively small part of the movie's two hour-plus running time. The rest of it is kind of generic stuff with a broad message...
Posted Jul 03, 2018Edit critic review
Rec 3: Genesis (2012) Charles Webb A worthy effort in the series and a nice twist on the first two.
