The American President (1995) Simon Rose A sweet, if very soft-centred, romantic comedy.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) Reg Whitley Out of this world, is probably a good way of describing this thrilling fantasy which makes first class entertainment.

A Place in the Sun (1951) Reg Whitley A memorable and very moving drama.
Posted Jan 13, 2026Edit critic review
Gaslight (1944) Reg Whitley It makes entertaining fare for those who enjoy grisly melodrama.
Posted Jan 13, 2026Edit critic review
Out of the Past (1947) Reg Whitley This is a somewhat rambling mystery thriller told by the irritating flash-back method.
Posted Jan 09, 2026Edit critic review
Alice in Wonderland (1951) Reg Whitley Disney has pepped up and modernised the story, altering some characters, deleting others but I think the end justifies the means, for it all adds up to colourful and charming entertainment.

Confessions of a Nazi Spy (1939) Reg Whitley The thrills are full flavoured because this is hot-stuff spy drama combined with a striking condemnation of Nazi methods.

Death Race 2000 (1975) Arthur Thirkell "Death Race 2000," conceived as a comic strip satire, debunks American heroes and institutions in a highly effective manner.
Posted Dec 19, 2025Edit critic review
Hook (1991) Pauline McLeod A showy, glitzy Hollywood extravaganza with little of the heart and soul of the original classic.
Posted Dec 18, 2025Edit critic review
Baby's Day Out (1994) Emma Norman What really spoils an otherwise standard comedy is the gooey sentimentality.
Posted Dec 09, 2025Edit critic review
True Lies (1994) Emma Norman The action is as big and brash as Arnold.
Posted Dec 09, 2025Edit critic review
Repo Man (1984) Arthur Thirkell It is a brilliant first feature, blending frantic slapstick with a wicked perception of life among the American punks.
Posted Dec 08, 2025Edit critic review
Finders Keepers (1984) Arthur Thirkell Director Dick Lester gets some splendid performances from Michael O'Keefe, Beverley D'Angelo, David Wayne and Brian Dennehy.
Posted Dec 08, 2025Edit critic review
The Terminator (1984) Arthur Thirkell Don't look for logic in the story, just marvel at the orgy of destruction.
Posted Dec 08, 2025Edit critic review
A Christmas Carol (1984) Arthur Thirkell The British supporting cast's acting is excellent.
Posted Dec 04, 2025Edit critic review
Peeper (1975) Arthur Thirkell The plot's not easy to follow and there are too many eccentric characters who don't seem to be sure whether they are playing for laughs or menace.
Posted Nov 22, 2025Edit critic review
The Wiz (1978) Arthur Thirkell As a magical experience, "The Wiz" qualifies as enchantment that never woz.
Posted Nov 18, 2025Edit critic review
Dracula (1979) Stanley Sayer The cast do it justice.
Posted Oct 21, 2025Edit critic review
Born Yesterday (1950) Reg Whitley A welter of well delivered wisecracks.

4/5
My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) Donald Sinden Marvelous performances all around, but Saeed Jaffrey, as a get-rich-quick uncle, is special.

3/5
The Celluloid Closet (1995) Simon Rose Nothing like as preachy as it sounds, with clips from more than a hundred movies, it's a fascinating look at a hidden corner of cinema and contains many surprises, even for the knowledgeable.

Tron (1982) Arthur Thirkell The film is a splendid, mind-boggling sci-fi adventure.
Posted Oct 06, 2025Edit critic review
3/5
Casper (1995) Simon Rose The acting is largely top notch and, while the plot is undoubtedly silly, it's carried off with such panache you happily suspend disbelief.

2/5
8 Heads in a Duffel Bag (1997) Simon Rose The story doesn't hang together -- it lacks comic invention and is marred by Comeau's uncharismatic acting.

4/5
My Best Friend's Wedding (1997) Simon Rose Much as I hate to say it, the film belongs to the casually wisecracking Everett... Without him, this would be a sweet but mundane romantic comedy. With him, the funny scenes are so joyous you don't mind the dull spots.

4/5
Donnie Brasco (1997) Simon Rose A superb movie with a brilliant performance by Pacino and some of the best movie dialogue for a long time.

2/5
Hard Eight (1996) Simon Rose Essentially, this is little more than a shaggy dog story drawn out to an excessive length.

2/4
Night of the Living Dead (1990) Monty Smith Remake of the low-budget black and white horror movie that set the standard for flesh-eating zombie films. This one doesn't live up to it.

This Is Spinal Tap (1984) Pauline McLeod At times Spinal Tap, an irreverent study of a heavy metal band's life on the road, is quite hilarious.

Mortal Kombat (1995) Simon Rose After the dismal Super Mario Brothers and Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat at last shows that it is possible to make a fair job of turning a computer game into a movie.

F1 The Movie (2025) Daniel Moxon F1: The Movie is visually and aurally spectacular pretty much from start to finish but, sadly, the Hollywood take on the sport starring Brad Pitt is let down by some glaring problems elsewhere.

The Gold Rush (1925) Daily Mirror Staff Although Charlie has kept us waiting for three years for a film, The Gold Rush is worth waiting for, and will prove a gold mine for Chaplin.
Posted Jun 24, 2025Edit critic review
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) Donald Zec It took four years to complete, £4 million to produce, and precisely two hours and 42 minutes to confirm that it is uncommonly painful not to laugh when you feel like it.

Opus (2025) Kimberly Nhundu Across its 100 minutes, of which I felt every single second, the thriller presents various interesting ideas but none of them stick.
Posted Mar 17, 2025Edit critic review
5/5
One of Them Days (2025) Kimberly Nhundu One of Them Days is every bit an homage to its beloved predecessors as it is a breath of fresh air. This is primarily because it has two female leads.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (2025) Samantha Bartlett There is a deeply emotional message to the film that I don't think even the other three before it have managed to achieve.

4/5
That Christmas (2024) Sara Wallis Whatever the "That Christmas" plot lacks in pace, the cracking cast list makes up for, even including new song Under The Tree from Ed Sheeran.
Posted Dec 12, 2024Edit critic review
3/5
Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) Rita Di Santo As dodgy, ludicrous and funny, as the film might be, as a public spectacle it’s probably not as embarrassing as being seen reading the book

Only Yesterday (1933) Reg Whitley A picture which tugs at the heartstrings throughout its run of over an hour and three-quarters, and is a godsend to those who enjoy a good cry.

The Mad Miss Manton (1938) Reg Whitley A darn good film of its type with some real laughs and genuine thrills.
Posted Apr 22, 2024Edit critic review
Jailhouse Rock (1957) Donald Zec A dreadful film. An unsavory, nauseating, queasy-making film, to turn even the best-insulated stomachs.

Home (2008) David Edwards A kind of anti-road movie, the first half is a genial rural snapshot but, when that bypass opens, the wheels come off and things take a turn for the surreal and boring.

The Searchers (1956) Reg Whitley The Searchers is a splendid. action-packed drama of the wide-open spaces.

Royal Family (1969) Mary Malone It's tough when you're always on parade. But... for all their flunkeys and palaces, jewels and crowns, they are shown to be trained professionals doing an honest job and enjoying it.

Simple Men (1992) Pauline McLeod Eccentric, bizarre and somewhat wry. But its quirky charm will keep you amused.
Posted Dec 14, 2023Edit critic review
The Last of the Mohicans (1992) Pauline McLeod Brooding, gaunt and passionate, Daniel simply oozes sex appeal as frontiersman Hawkeye in Michael Mann's sizzling epic.

Wonka (2023) Andy Lea King’s genius lies in his ability to tickle both growing and creaking funny bones at the same time. I think we’ve got a new Christmas classic.
Posted Dec 04, 2023Edit critic review
The Duellists (1977) Arthur Thirkell The Duellists is that cinema rarity -- a superbly-acted adventure epic boasting an intelligent script and marvellous photography of setting which seem to have been painted by Old Masters.
Posted Nov 21, 2023Edit critic review
Alien (1979) Arthur Thirkell Alien is an ingenious, nail-biting, don't-look-now suspense thriller which makes other Space adventures look like tantrums in a nursery.
