Rating Title | Year Author Quote
Windy City Heat (2003) Fred Topel It's all worth a watch. In an age where "reality" comedy is coming to the forefront with Jackass and Borat, Windy City Heat is a worthy brother in the genre.
Posted Oct 03, 2017Edit critic review
Barry Munday (2010) Fred Topel Barry remains immature in serious situations like a doctors office. He does follow a respectable character arc, never sacrificing humor to learn his lessons.
Posted Oct 04, 2010Edit critic review
The Last Exorcism (2010) Fred Topel The characters are better than in any of the other pseudo-documentary films.
Posted Sep 02, 2010Edit critic review
Going the Distance (2010) Fred Topel They're either trying to copy someone else's personality or they mistakenly think they're being original. At least they don't have sex with bras on. That's realistic.
Posted Sep 02, 2010Edit critic review
The American (2010) Fred Topel It manages to make you suspicious and pay attention to all the details in the scene. The filmmakers earn our trust so that whatever surprises they spring on us are awesome.
Posted Sep 02, 2010Edit critic review
The Expendables (2010) Fred Topel It's like being in Stallone's head watching his stream of consciousness manifest.
Posted Aug 14, 2010Edit critic review
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) Fred Topel Just extraordinary filmmaking... This is how you can use modern film techniques to create a fantasy world of wonder.
Posted Aug 14, 2010Edit critic review
Flipped (2010) Fred Topel Could be one of the great films. I mean one of THE great films. I wish I could have seen it when I was a kid, before I learned everything the hard way.
Posted Aug 06, 2010Edit critic review
The Other Guys (2010) Fred Topel How has there not been a major tentpole set piece involving a wrecking ball before? It takes a comedy to do great crazy action.
Posted Aug 06, 2010Edit critic review
Step Up 3 (2010) Fred Topel Calling it the best Step Up isn't even enough. It's the most awesome movie of the year. These dancers are the best special effects in Hollywood, and they're real.
Posted Aug 06, 2010Edit critic review
Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore (2010) Fred Topel May be the most adorable movie of the summer. I didn't see Marmaduke but I'm guessing they didn't have kittens in it, so this one edges that out already. It's basically just a harmless series of "awwww" moments.
Posted Jul 31, 2010Edit critic review
Please Remove Your Shoes (2010) Fred Topel This is pure information and call to action.
Posted Jul 27, 2010Edit critic review
Despicable Me (2010) Fred Topel The whole movie is automatically working against this assault of noise. The decision to give the main characters eastern European accents makes them more annoying too.
Posted Jul 15, 2010Edit critic review
Predators (2010) Fred Topel Just pure awesome.
Posted Jul 15, 2010Edit critic review
The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010) Fred Topel Good, solid entertainment jam packed with creativity.
Posted Jul 15, 2010Edit critic review
Love Ranch (2010) Fred Topel It's all melodrama and yelling. The material is way beneath the actors... at least you get to see Pesci do "angry Joe" again.
Posted Jul 06, 2010Edit critic review
Inception (2010) Fred Topel I didn't get my mind blown by Inception but I enjoyed it. I mean, it's no Total Recall.
Posted Jul 06, 2010Edit critic review
Monsters (2010) Fred Topel District 9 with a language barrier.
Posted Jul 01, 2010Edit critic review
The Last Airbender (2010) Fred Topel It captivated my imagination.
Posted Jul 01, 2010Edit critic review
Freakonomics (2010) Fred Topel With different filmmakers handling each segment, some obviously work better than others, but either way it is the book.
Posted Jul 01, 2010Edit critic review
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010) Fred Topel I like seeing Edward frustrated by Bella's individuality. He can't control her and make her do what he wants. This 'perfect' love is actually totally incompatible.
Posted Jul 01, 2010Edit critic review
Knight and Day (2010) Fred Topel It's an unmarried True Lies
Posted Jun 25, 2010Edit critic review
Grown Ups (2010) Fred Topel It's not a joke to just treat someone badly. Jokes are creative. Just saying, 'You failed at that and you suck' isn't a joke. Even if you dress it all up with some comic metaphor, it's not an actual joke.
Posted Jun 25, 2010Edit critic review
Jonah Hex (2010) Fred Topel I liked it so much, I really want to see the rest of it. It can't really be a 75 minute movie, right?
Posted Jun 18, 2010Edit critic review
Toy Story 3 (2010) Fred Topel I seem to be defending each issue with a surprising amount of forgiveness. Maybe it's one of those amazing conundrums where you love the stuff it does, but you hate how it gets there, and you're stuck with this push-pull of pleasure and remorse.
Posted Jun 18, 2010Edit critic review
Get Him to the Greek (2010) Fred Topel Just funny
Posted Jun 11, 2010Edit critic review
The A-Team (2010) Fred Topel The Star Trek of A-Team movies
Posted Jun 11, 2010Edit critic review
The Karate Kid (2010) Fred Topel There's also a lot of subtitled Chinese dialogue. Kids will have to read so it's educational too.
Posted Jun 11, 2010Edit critic review
Splice (2009) Fred Topel It maintains a fun underlying technology, and the monster part does go places most studio films wouldn't dare.
Posted Jun 04, 2010Edit critic review
Shrek Forever After (2010) Fred Topel All the whiners who bashed the other revisionist sequels better raise arms here too. It'll amuse me to see Shrek fans get as angry as Spider-Man fans.
Posted May 29, 2010Edit critic review
Survival of the Dead (2009) Fred Topel How right wing do you have to be to protect zombie rights? I mean, what good is keeping alive a zombie?... I guess in the zombie holocaust there's no more abortion or gay marriage so you've got to court the zombie-hugger vote.
Posted May 29, 2010Edit critic review
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010) Fred Topel May be the best video game movie ever by default... I think I say that about every video game movie that comes out, because they're still forgettable by the time the next one comes out.
Posted May 29, 2010Edit critic review
Robin Hood (2010) Fred Topel Of course Marian has to fight now too because women always fight in movies now and this is like everything else. Remember when that was new? It was actually a big deal when it started happening. Now it's another cliché.
Posted May 14, 2010Edit critic review
A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) Fred Topel This is just Nightmare 9 and you can believe this is the real backstory they never told you before, not that nonsense about the three flying heads.
Posted Apr 30, 2010Edit critic review
Iron Man 2 (2010) Fred Topel Iron Man 2 is the sequel everyone thinks Spider-Man 2 was.
Posted Apr 27, 2010Edit critic review
The Back-up Plan (2010) Fred Topel The film has a really hateful view of single moms. My God, I just want to tell all the single moms out there that I don't believe this movie and I do respect you.
Posted Apr 23, 2010Edit critic review
The Losers (2010) Fred Topel It doesn't try to be the definitive Losers movie. It's clearly just one episode of The Losers.
Posted Apr 23, 2010Edit critic review
Micmacs (2009) Fred Topel By the way, is that a billboard for Micmacs in the movie? If I'm right, that is awesome.
Posted Apr 16, 2010Edit critic review
Clash of the Titans (2010) Fred Topel Every creature is so busy it looks like Pirates of the Caribbean 3... I don't care how big you made the Kraken, it looks stupid.
Posted Apr 16, 2010Edit critic review
Date Night (2010) Fred Topel We all have the same problems whether we're suburbanites or strippers. That's a healthy perspective.
Posted Apr 16, 2010Edit critic review
Death at a Funeral (2010) Fred Topel I didn't like the British original at all. So to say that the American remake is okay is actually a huge improvement. I guess Americans are just better at mediocrity.
Posted Apr 16, 2010Edit critic review
MacGruber (2010) Fred Topel I could not believe the stuff I was seeing in this movie... You just won't believe where it goes, and that's comedy... I laughed my *** off at MacGruber.
Posted Mar 26, 2010Edit critic review
The Runaways (2010) Fred Topel Where Ray and Walk the Line like to revel in the actor-y scenes of darkness, The Runaways actually captures the energy of the music and uses the dark incidents sparingly to actually make a point.
Posted Mar 26, 2010Edit critic review
How to Train Your Dragon (2010) Fred Topel You can't fault a movie with the message: 'Don't kill. Learn instead.'
Posted Mar 26, 2010Edit critic review
Hot Tub Time Machine (2010) Fred Topel The whole point is to just be silly and irreverent with time travel and midlife crisis movies. For it to devolve into gay jokes and F words is a sad disappointment.
Posted Mar 26, 2010Edit critic review
Cyrus (2010) Fred Topel It's easy for a swingin' ladies man like myself to appreciate why a less fortunate character might project gratitude at the generosity of a compassionate companion. I assume that's what one might relate to if one has lived through those feelings.
Posted Mar 17, 2010Edit critic review
Kick-Ass (2010) Fred Topel It's so well made. Each fight has its own personality. It's not always visual, but it's visceral.
Posted Mar 17, 2010Edit critic review
Green Zone (2010) Fred Topel When shots go in and out of focus, and when over the shoulder shots actually obscure the subject's face, that's not okay. You should know what you're shooting, even if it's constructed as 'documentary' style.
Posted Mar 17, 2010Edit critic review
Alice in Wonderland (2010) Fred Topel A stream of consciousness collection of magical encounters and whimsical characters.
Posted Mar 05, 2010Edit critic review
The Crazies (2010) Fred Topel This is the movie you wanted Outbreak to be.
