The Guilt Trip (2012) Austin Kennedy This movie takes absolutely zero chances. It's one of those safe, middle-of-the-road movies that conservative Uncle Fred (who sees 2 movies a year) can recommend to you during Thanksgiving. Thanks Fred!

The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) Austin Kennedy THE SPY WHO LOVED ME is not as good as I remembered it. All of its chases and action were much better in my memories. In reality, they're a bit lackluster.

1.5/4
Simon and the Oaks (2011) Austin Kennedy What starts off as an intriguing coming-of-age story, ends up being a convoluted movie with too many characters having problems.

.5/4
Keep the Lights On (2012) Austin Kennedy It all has the feel of a pretentious film student desperately trying to make a statement with his thesis film. It's extremely overwrought with laughable melodrama.

2/4
The Man With the Golden Gun (1974) Austin Kennedy This one has all the right ingredients to be a great Bond flick, I mean Christopher Lee is the main villain! I don't exactly know how they screwed this up, but they did.

2/4
Live and Let Die (1973) Austin Kennedy I can see how many people can be entertained by this ludicrous film, but not because it's good. It features an outstanding performance from Moore and has an enjoyably bad Blaxploitation thing going on here, but not much else.

Diamonds Are Forever (1971) Austin Kennedy After struggling with a few films to find the right vibe and tone for a Bond film, DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER finds a nice balance that would work for a while.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) Austin Kennedy Besides not being a terribly good Bond entry, it's also a poorly made film.

2.5/4
007 - You Only Live Twice (1967) Austin Kennedy the action scenes are quite enjoyable and the special effects are terrific. But the story is just so lazy and lackluster that I became uninterested during any scenes that didn't contain gunshots or explosions.

2/4
Thunderball (1965) Austin Kennedy The ambition is evident throughout, but the execution just doesn't have enough energy to sustain it. THUNDERBALL is very sluggish.

3/4
007: Goldfinger (1964) Austin Kennedy GOLDFINGER, for me, isn't the perfect Bond movie (though it does have all the elements to be perfect), but it's still a fun, corny time. Definition of a popcorn movie.

2/4
The Other Dream Team (2012) Austin Kennedy The lack of focus makes for a lackluster Documentary.

3/4
War of the Buttons (2011) Austin Kennedy It's a pretty familiar story, but it's done with tender care and definite style. Director Christophe Barratier fills the movie with a refreshing sense of wonder, imagination and innocence.

3.5/4
From Russia With Love (1963) Austin Kennedy Everything that worked in DR. NO is fully realized here. Sean Connery is 10 times more confident here as 007, oozing charm and masculinity.

2.5/4
Dr. No (1962) Austin Kennedy The film geek in me wants to praise it, but the film critic in me wants to expose its flaws. I still have a soft spot for it, but if I'm being truly honest, it's kind of lackluster.

3.5/4
Seven Psychopaths (2012) Austin Kennedy It's like a BOONDOCK SAINTS for people who have "good" taste in movies.
Posted Oct 12, 2012Edit critic review
2.5
Step Up to the Plate (2012) Austin Kennedy There are some interesting father/son dynamic moments in the film that give it some merit. But I thought JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI, which was released earlier this year, was much more focused and pretty much the same story.

V/H/S (2012) Austin Kennedy I did like the first segment, but the others are the reasons why I normally dislike many entries from the horror genre. It's an interesting concept, but unfortunately it just falls apart.

2.5/4
Hotel Transylvania (2012) Austin Kennedy I was pleasantly surprised by how inventive and funny the first 20 minutes were. Unfortunately, the rest of the movie doesn't live up to those first 20 minutes.

Hello I Must Be Going (2012) Austin Kennedy It's harmless, and there's really nothing outright awful about the movie, it just could have been so much better if the filmmakers thought outside of the Sundance box for this one.

3/4
Hope Springs (2012) Austin Kennedy This film is a terrific and welcome break from the loud and noisy films of the typical summer blockbuster.
Posted Aug 08, 2012Edit critic review
3/4
Total Recall (2012) Austin Kennedy As much as the inner fanboy in me wanted to say that they should have never remade TOTAL RECALL, the openminded critic in me found plenty to like here.

3/4
Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012) Austin Kennedy I really wasn't expecting much, and let's be honest, these movies will never be mistaken for a Pixar-type movie, but you know what? I had a surprisingly good time.
Posted Jul 12, 2012Edit critic review
2.5/4
Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) Austin Kennedy The acting is brilliant and the story is truly original (though I think some of the fantasy elements don't quite gel in the end), but the shaky cam technique needs to be put out of its misery.

2/4
The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) Austin Kennedy I don't think adding realism to every superhero story is the right way to go. It worked for THE DARK KNIGHT, but just because that was successful doesn't mean you need to do that for every character from a comic book.
Posted Jul 02, 2012Edit critic review
3/4
Ted (2012) Austin Kennedy The plot is so cliched that it practically becomes a parody within itself, complete with obvious musical cues and convenient plot twists. I'm sure this was all intentional, and it works as both an homage and satire of buddy, romantic/comedies.

3.5/4
Magic Mike (2012) Austin Kennedy Soderbergh wisely directs the film in the same vein as some of the great dark dramas from the 70's, like SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER and (especially) THE GAMBLER.
Posted Jun 29, 2012Edit critic review
3/4
Brave (2012) Austin Kennedy After the predictably generic first 40 minutes, the movie turns into an unexpected magical journey that was moving in the way we expect Pixar movies to be.
Posted Jun 21, 2012Edit critic review
3/4
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012) Austin Kennedy What starts off as almost a sketch comedy with broad humor turns into an intimate character piece about 2 unlikely individuals forming a strong bond.
Posted Jun 21, 2012Edit critic review
2.5/4
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012) Austin Kennedy This almost works, but the script isn't realized enough to be fully satisfying. It all looks cool and dandy, but it's cold blooded.
Posted Jun 21, 2012Edit critic review
3.5/4
Rock of Ages (2012) Austin Kennedy The movie has it's tongue through it's cheek (as opposed to just tongue-in-cheek). It knows how stupid it is, and embraces it. ROCK OF AGES isn't full of great nuances or anything meaningful. It's just one hell of a good time.

2.5/4
That's My Boy (2012) Austin Kennedy I laughed sporadically throughout, but not enough to call it a successful comedy. There are too many dead spots, and that first half hour is unwatchable.

3.5/4
Paul Williams Still Alive (2011) Austin Kennedy It's an interesting look at celebrities and the filmmakers that try to document them.
Posted Jun 09, 2012Edit critic review
3/4
Prometheus (2012) Austin Kennedy This is not a gamechanger. It's a standard Sci-Fi thriller that's done well. I was entertained, but probably would have liked it even more if the hype wasn't so out of control.

3.5/4
Moonrise Kingdom (2012) Austin Kennedy It's sweet, charming, quirky, imaginative, poignant, and whimsical. Just what a Wes Anderson film should be.
Posted Jun 07, 2012Edit critic review
2/4
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (2012) Austin Kennedy If you want to see a family film that tries to make kids laugh by throwing lots of loud scenes with obnoxious characters doing annoying things and features the latest crappy pop songs, then MADAGASCAR 3 is for you.
Posted Jun 07, 2012Edit critic review
2/4
Goodbye First Love (2011) Austin Kennedy I can respect the director for the effort, but it felt too much like a self important student film.
Posted Jun 07, 2012Edit critic review
4/4
The Fairy (2011) Austin Kennedy This has to be one of the most imaginative, articulately planned, strange, wacky, whimsical, unique and flat out hysterical films I have seen in at least a few years.
Posted May 31, 2012Edit critic review
3.5/4
Hysteria (2011) Austin Kennedy A film with a potentially raunchy subject matter is handled with taste and elegance. Even though it's about the invention of a sex toy, it was done in such a manner that I would feel comfortable taking my mom to this.
Posted May 31, 2012Edit critic review
2/4
Snow White and the Huntsman (2012) Austin Kennedy Though there are moments that are visually interesting to gaze at, the characters are severely underdeveloped, the direction generic, and the pacing kind of slow.
Posted May 31, 2012Edit critic review
2.5/4
For Greater Glory (2012) Austin Kennedy This movie either needed to be longer, to expand the storylines that were lacking, or shorter, cutting all the stories and characters that weren't fully developed.
Posted May 31, 2012Edit critic review
.5/4
Jesus' Son (1999) Austin Kennedy JESUS' SON is bottom of the line trash that wants to be art. Full of self important crap, tedious performances, and embarrassing experimental flourishes, this is a movie to avoid at all costs.
Posted May 29, 2012Edit critic review
1/4
Black Mask (1996) Austin Kennedy Poorly lit, crooked camera angles (that didn't match one shot from the next) make the film nearly unwatchable.
Posted May 29, 2012Edit critic review
2.5/4
Love and Death on Long Island (1997) Austin Kennedy Unfortunately, Hurt is so good that almost everyone around him pales in comparison. Priestley just doesn't have the acting chops to play in the same scenes with him.
Posted May 27, 2012Edit critic review
1.5/4
Vegas Vacation (1997) Austin Kennedy Despite Chevy Chase's decent effort trying to revive the Griswold franchise, VEGAS VACATION is just a big disappointment. This one could have just premiered on TV, as it resembles that sort of mediocrity.
Posted May 26, 2012Edit critic review
2/4
Small Wonders (1995) Austin Kennedy I won't deny that this subject is important, but the movie is put together in such a sloppy fashion that it wouldn't even be acceptable for a PBS special.
Posted May 25, 2012Edit critic review
2.5/4
Killer (1994) Austin Kennedy It's pretty sophisticated when it comes to it's characters, but lazy in it's filmmaking aspects.
Posted May 24, 2012Edit critic review
2.5/4
Chernobyl Diaries (2012) Austin Kennedy I can see the average horror junkie looking for some cheap scares and are more forgiving to generic horror movie conventions digging it enough. I just would've liked to see this promising premise followed through with some worthy characters

3/4
You Instead (2011) Austin Kennedy It took a bit for me to get into it, but the characters eventually won me over.
Posted May 24, 2012Edit critic review
4/4
Headhunters (2011) Austin Kennedy HEADHUNTERS is an exhilarating thriller with great visual flare, top notch acting, and a story that will have you so involved that you'll possibly have no fingernails by the end of it!
