Australia (2008) Dave White What you do get... is a firm commitment to epic, triple-espresso-shot extreme romance (the kind spelled XTREEEM!) and the kind of tear-jerking that involves having both your arms wrenched behind your back until you holler "Uncle!"

Deception (2008) Dave White You know what's not sexy? Sexiness. I mean the overt, in-your-face, "Aren't we all being sultry and naughty?" sort of sexiness. Which is what this entire movie is, thinking it's daring.

ShowBusiness: The Road to Broadway (2005) Dave White It's really people who don't see much theater - like me - who'll come away having actually seen something new here.

Happy Feet (2006) Dave White It zigs and zags into a lot of different places you're not expecting. Entertaining throughout. But trippy.

Flushed Away (2006) Dave White It's smarter than all the other 2006 animated movies, save for Monster House.

Scoop (2006) Dave White It's funny enough to keep you from cringing, but not nearly as good as Match Point. Of course, Match Point wasn't trying to be funny either. So proceed with caution.

Atomic Blonde (2017) Peter Hall Atomic Blonde has one of the greatest action scenes ever filmed.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) Erik Davis A movie that pushes boundaries and takes the kinds of risks this series needs to take in order to evolve to a point where it can tell completely new Star Wars stories featuring characters we've never seen before.

My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea (2016) Erik Davis This year's most hilariously unique disaster movie.

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (2016) Erik Davis Even if it feels a little too muddled and busy in its execution, there's enough here to inspire a more thoughtful and educated approach to telling a soldier's story.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) Peter Hall One of the best horror movies of the year.

Split (2017) Peter Hall Split is good, 'ole fashioned Shyamalan. It will greatly reward those who have still stuck with the filmmaker throughout his career and will hopefully introduce a new generation to his special brand of storytelling.

Better Watch Out (2016) Peter Hall The reason why I'm nervous to talk too much about it is because one of the movie's biggest strengths is having the audience constantly wondering where the line is drawn, and wondering what each character is capable of.

Sleight (2016) Erik Davis Sleight is a film that may not feel as fresh as, say, Chronicle, but its low-budget genre sensibilities mixed with more urban undertones speak directly to the sort of entertainment audiences are craving these days.

The Double (2011) Dave White Have you ever seen a movie like this? Yes? Then you know the answers to those questions. Or at least some of the answers. And you're right, they all involve "gotcha."

Suicide Squad (2016) Erik Davis Its structure is messy & its storytelling is incoherent at times, but it looks good, sounds great and pushes the genre forward in some neat ways.

Ghostbusters (2016) Erik Davis Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones masterfully navigate their way around a ghost-fueled movie that fully embraces their brand of comedy ...

Captain America: Civil War (2016) John Gholson Civil War is of course a huge payoff for fans who've been following from the start, but even the casual movie-goers will pick up on the fact that there's something slightly more special about this one.

The Invitation (2015) Peter Hall Thanks to some remarkable performances all around from its stellar cast, a deft directorial hand from Karyn Kusama, and a dark script that needles its way into your brain, it's a story and experience you'll not soon forget.

Under the Shadow (2016) John Gholson A perfect stage for terror...[Reaches] the fever pitch intensity of the very best haunted house movies, jump scares and all.

Pee-wee's Big Holiday (2016) John Gholson Like a late stage album from a band who peaked decades before, the surprise is gone, the punch is softer, but you certainly hear the bits in there that made you a fan in the first place.

10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) Erik Davis ...a psychological cinematic chess game stuffed with thrills, chills and a neat little premise that keeps you guessing till the very last shot

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (2016) Erik Davis 13 Hours is a loud, ferocious fire-breather full of the kind of Bayhem you've come to expect from director Michael Bay, except there's this seething anger that's impossible to miss and it's all over the film.

Creed (2015) John Gholson We knew Creed was always a worthy opponent, but we never expected Creed to be such a worthy sequel/spin-off movie.

The Peanuts Movie (2015) Erik Davis The fact that Charlie Brown isn't on Snapchat is one of the reasons why I loved 'The Peanuts Movie.'

Bone Tomahawk (2015) John Gholson First-time director S. Craig Zahler's script deliberately leans on Old West cliches, but is buoyed by crackling dialogue and strong performances.

The Devil's Candy (2015) John Gholson Kiara Glasco gives one of the best 'scream queen' performances of all-time...A muscular, punchy genre exercise that feels like a new classic simply because the filmmakers noticeably gave a damn.

Skyfall (2012) Dave White Mendes and Deakins have] created the most beautifully deep focus context for Bond yet, pushing and pulling him into landscapes... that each promise the physically compromised spy nothing less than the most cinematically gorgeous sort of doom.

High-Rise (2015) John Gholson Laing could've been unlikeable and unsympathetic in anyone else's hands, especially as things escalate, but Hiddleston's innate charm gives the film license to get ugly without losing the audience. Laing is Hiddleston's best work to date.

Finders Keepers (2015) John Gholson An easy contender for one of the funniest docs of all time...It's gut-busting, can't-breathe funny, but introspective and knowing as well.

Man vs Snake: The Long and Twisted Tale of Nibbler (2015) John Gholson Like The King of Kong before it, Man Vs. Snake finds humor, heart, and an unlikely underdog 'sports' story in the unique world of retro video gaming.

Fantastic Four (2015) John Gholson Fantastic Four figures out a way to approach a familiar origin story with unexpected smarts, then all-but-squanders that goodwill in its dumbed-down finale.
Posted Aug 06, 2015Edit critic review
Ant-Man (2015) John Gholson The finale is something else - a symphony of comedy and action mayhem that outclasses every single second that comes before it. Nothing else in the movie even comes close.

Kick-Ass 2 (2013) Dave White It's nasty and hard-R violent, which counts for something, somewhere. Just not enough for here or now.

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) John Gholson Regardless, this time with Avengers: Age of Ultron, our socks were only tugged on, halfway flopping off our collective toes, but never blown quite off.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 (2015) Dave White Kevin James and Nick Bakay are credited as screenwriters, but that's only because "Taking Naps" and "I Went Out To Get A Sandwich" are not Writer's Guild credits yet.

The Divide (2011) Dave White Whatever edge of fear and tension the movie might have possessed is traded for blistering annoyance as the cast near-cannibalizes one another while screeching at top volume for over 120 minutes.

The Little Death (2014) John Gholson Erin James and T.J. Power get the least amount of screen time of all the couples in the anthology sex farce The Little Death, but they create the most lasting impression.

3.5/5
A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014) Dave White It's a feel-bad crime movie all around, one predicated on the fact that crime leaves real victims. Don't let the weapon on the poster fool you. This isn't Taken. It's a dark cellar, and your eyes may need time to adjust.
