North (1994) Nanciann Cherry Reiner stumbles mightily and injects no swash or humor into Alan Zweibel's tedious and predictable script.

The American President (1995) Nanciann Cherry A film to see twice: once for the story, once to concentrate on the conversation. It wins by a landslide.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) Mel Hayes Although some persons, no doubt, will feel the fantasy is a bit too fantastic for their tastes, many will find it gives their blood pressure just the proper pick-up.

Stand by Me (1986) Fred Lutz Sane, wise, artful, and generally engrossing.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) Christopher Borrelli Somewhere Akira Kurosawa, the late Japanese master who gave us sweeping war epics like Ran, is shedding a tear. He'd be impressed; not just by Jackson's mastery of scale, but because the director never loses track of humanity in his spectacle.

A Few Good Men (1992) Nanciann Cherry A Few Good Men is a movie to be savored. What few false moves it makes are more than compensated for by its intelligence, wit, suspense, and fine performances.

Alice in Wonderland (1951) Bernard Judy This is, in short, perfect escapist entertainment for adults and a rich screen treat for the children.

The Sure Thing (1985) Fred Lutz Adults, too, will not be impervious to the charm here, not to mention the captivating contemporary echoes of when Gable and Colbert were on the road.

The Princess Bride (1987) Fred Lutz The Princess Bride is just about the most labored, clumsy, and boring movie I've had to endure this year. The only thing funny about it is that so few people seem to be coming out and saying so.

When Harry Met Sally... (1989) Fred Lutz Thanks to Ephron's witty but down-to-earth dialogue and perfectly synchronized performances from Crystal and Ryan, it would be absolutely impossible for any sane viewer not to feel very warmly about harry and Sally.

Bite the Bullet (1975) Norman Dresser I found this a dully, overlong film which only occasionally is sparked by flashes of creativity.

Christine (1983) Fred Lutz Carpenter is not without some directorial pizzazz. In "Christine," though, his talent is almost completely stalled by the directionless script.

Big Top Pee-wee (1988) Ann Fisher Pee-wee is surrounded by so many other off-beat characters, he just doesn't stand out from the crowd, nor do his jokes -- both the adult and children's versions.

The Abyss (1989) Fred Lutz All the characters portrayed so vividly by these actors lend all-important human scale to what might have been merely an uninvolving technical amazement
Posted Dec 09, 2025Edit critic review
The Terminator (1984) Fred Lutz It brings just about as much inventively explosive action to the screen as any recent movie that comes to mind.
Posted Dec 08, 2025Edit critic review
The Running Man (1987) Fred Lutz The basic script is substantially better than anything Schwarzenegger has had before, and he makes the most of it.
Posted Nov 06, 2025Edit critic review
Predator (1987) Fred Lutz As usual in shoot-'em-ups like this, you will search in vain for any great character development or thematic significance.
Posted Oct 31, 2025Edit critic review
Dracula (1979) Norman Dresser "Dracula" is a cunning blend of horror and romance and it's a movie with considerable class in all departments.
Posted Oct 23, 2025Edit critic review
From Beyond (1986) Fred Lutz The campy style that made "Re-Animator" such self-mocking ghoulish fun becomes merely a gross-out in "From Beyond."
Posted Oct 20, 2025Edit critic review
Born Yesterday (1950) Mitch Woodbury Producer S. Sylvan Simon, Director George Cukor and scenarist Albert Mannheimer have done a masterful job in translating the Kanin caper into terms of celluloid.
Posted Oct 13, 2025Edit critic review
Desert Hearts (1985) Fred Lutz Shaver, Charbonneau, and Lindley all turn in touching and persuasive performances. In the same regard, director Deitch also deserves credit.

My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) Fred Lutz [Kureishi] has created social comedy at its most mordant. it is whimsical, scathing, sad, frightening, and very instructive.
Posted Oct 10, 2025Edit critic review
Tron (1982) Tom Gearhart Despite its bold concept and some of the most stunning graphics ever presented on screen, "Tron" is a movie of severely limited imagination, and one which lacks the most important ingredient of all -- a soul.

Casper (1995) Nanciann Cherry A 50-year-old comic-book ghost translates to a frighteningly good time at the movies.
Posted Oct 03, 2025Edit critic review
Hard Times (1975) Norman Dresser They're trying to inject a little class into Charles Bronson's action-oriented act and the result is "Hard Times," a flawed surprisingly good movie.

Spider-Man (2002) Christopher Borrelli Sam Raimi's Spider-Man is a loving day-dream of a superhero movie. It has nothing but warmth and admiration for Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's original 1962 comic.

4/4
Boogie Nights (1997) Christopher Borrelli It's a sprawling, grand mess of energy, pathos, storytelling, and chutzpah, the celluloid equivalent of a 16-year-old boy with roller skates on his feet and a jet pack strapped to his back.

Hard Eight (1996) Christopher Borrelli Some movies slink to their endings, others leap with glee, some strut, and then there are ones that walk a few steps, duck into an alley way, smoke a cigarette, step out of the shadows, and arrive home at 3:15 a.m. Hard Eight does that.

Night of the Living Dead (1990) Rick Nease Romero's script basically cribs from the original screenplay, adjusting the dramatic devices to make it different...but not better.

3.5/4
Toy Story (1995) Nanciann Cherry The world created by the artists is so utterly believable that viewers will have no trouble accepting the fact that toys talk and bicker and worry and play when no one's around.

This Is Spinal Tap (1984) Tom Gearhart Parody doesn't get much better than what director Rob Reiner and his fellow writers and actors dish up here.

Darkman (1990) Rick Nease In a difficult role that requires a broad range of emotions, Neeson is both horrifying and charismatic.

Requiem for a Dream (2000) Christopher Borrelli ...director Darren Aronofsky's second film ends up with the usual descent into junkie hell - only one told from the smug, safe vantage point of a filmmaker sweating it out in an editing room.

Escape to Witch Mountain (1975) Norman Dresser “Escape to Witch Mountain” may be formula, but it's a superior entry in its class.

Funny Lady (1975) Norman Dresser Miss Streisand is in fine form, both as a singer and as an actress.

Mr. Ricco (1975) Norman Dresser I pondered at length trying to find a justification for making this movie.

Rafferty and the Gold Dust Twins (1975) Norman Dresser The picture has a certain lean honesty which lifts it above the banality of the theme, and scattered throughout is a wry wit which imparts a certain charm.

Report to the Commissioner (1975) Boris Nelson The film has a slow beginning, trying to fit together the pieces of the puzzle, but the drama mounts with increasing suspense.

The Great Waldo Pepper (1975) Boris Nelson The film stirs memories of earlier aviation and the boys who dared the sky and moistens your palms as you fly along, thanks to exciting camera work by Robert Surtees and the air work by Tallmantz Aviation.

The Prisoner of Second Avenue (1975) Norman Dresser Despite the bleakness of the theme, "Prisoner of Second Avenue" ranks as an entertaining and often funny movie.
Posted Aug 20, 2025Edit critic review
The Song Remains the Same (1976) Norman Dresser It is a garish movie.
Posted Aug 20, 2025Edit critic review
The Stepford Wives (1975) Norman Dresser No performer can rise much above the padded script and dull direction of this movie.
Posted Aug 20, 2025Edit critic review
The Yakuza (1974) Boris Nelson What makes this film interesting, even fascinating, is not so much the sustained brutality as it is the very comfortably paced look into another tradition, another culture.
Posted Aug 20, 2025Edit critic review
Tommy (1975) Boris Nelson The purpose of all of this as entertainment escapes me completely.
Posted Aug 20, 2025Edit critic review
Starman (1984) Tom Ensign Its best effect is that it is a truly enjoyable movie.

Day of the Dead (1985) Fred Lutz If any redeeming features at all exist in "Day of the Dead," I couldn't spot them.

DuckTales, the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp (1990) Nanciann Cherry It just wants to provide a good grin. And that's what "DuckTales" does.

Cooley High (1975) Norman Dresser While Turman and Jacobs can't be described as exceptional actors, they play their roles spiritedly and with good comedy timing.
Posted Aug 15, 2025Edit critic review
Ewoks: The Battle for Endor (1985) Nanciann Cherry The acting is top quality, with curmudgeonly Wilfred Brimley nearly stealing the two-hour show.
Posted Aug 14, 2025Edit critic review
Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure (1984) Tom Ensign "The Ewok Adventure" is an interesting, and fun, two hours.
