A Christmas Carol (1984) Pam Grady This is a handsome production, as well, with lavish production design and gorgeous (particularly for a TV movie) cinematography.

Predator (1987) Jeffrey Wachs Predator succeeds largely by its introduction of a charismatic alien.

This Is Spinal Tap (1984) Carrie R. Wheadon Guest, McKean, and Shearer largely improvise each scene, giving the film a bona fide documentary feel and providing a window into each performer's awesome comedic talent.

Babe (1995) Pam Grady Combining real-live animals with computer animation and excellent animatronics, Babe is one of the few features of the genre in which the talking animals seem almost natural rather than bizarre movie freaks.

Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985) Jeffrey Wachs What elevates PWBA above the crop is the creativity that went into its making.

Final Destination (2000) Tor Thorsen Wong knows how to create a sinister atmosphere, liberally applying gloomy lighting and making strategic use of gore, including a grisly hanging scene complete with eight ball-hemorrhaged eyes. But the director also keeps the atmosphere playful.

Final Destination (2000) Rod Armstrong It's a solid scenario, and Final Destination offers some decent performances, a few good scares, and a number of very surprising and creative death scenes.

3/4
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002) Tor Thorsen There is action galore, although much of it is either superfluous (the Coruscant chase) or derivative (the Gladiator rip-off coliseum scene).

American Psycho (2000) Rod Armstrong Christian Bale is pitch-perfect as the psychopathic Patrick Bateman.

Do the Right Thing (1989) Rod Armstrong ...Lee has never been very interested in answers; it's the questions that obsess him. Do the Right Thing, his best film thus far, is a perfect example of his searching nature...

Chin Up! (1999) Betsy Bozdech Viard is remarkable, her skillful performance capturing Emma's incredible resilience and will to fight for her baby in the face of such a daunting obstacle.

Nadia and the Hippos (1999) Betsy Bozdech [Cabrera draws] on the intimacy of darkness - illuminated by firelight, headlights, and, in one scene, a flare or two - to bring her characters together and draw the audience into their precarious political and social position.

Beauty and the Beast (1991) James Plath This beloved 1991 film has never looked better, and seems even more magical in Blu-ray.

OSS 117: Lost in Rio (2009) James Plath Laugh-out-loud funny.

6/10
The Last Song (2010) James Plath A melodrama that's aimed at teen girls, but the cinematography and performances make it palatable for others as well--if you don't mind someone toying with your emotions.

Shotgun Stories (2007) Bonnie Fazio Writer/director Jeff Nichols is one to watch. He has fashioned a simple but powerful cautionary tale, equal parts Southern Gothic and Greek tragedy, and has given a familiar kind of material a fresh spin.

Ballast (2008) Chris Cabin The first film in some time that has attempted to bring Bressonian singularity and emotional depth to the American independent picture.

1/4
All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (2006) Blake French So self-conscious that the movie feels like a feature length music video that's too busy admiring itself it the mirror to make any sense.

Elegy (2008) Brie Beazley A nicely shot, slow-moving drama that takes its time to really let the audience get to know its characters.

All in This Tea (2007) Pam Grady It makes one long to sit down with a nice cup of tea. Theaters showing this excellent documentary might want to keep that in mind and stock up.

Postal (2007) Paul Brenner Quickly, the film turns nihilistic and very nasty.

The Visitor (2007) Pam Grady [Director Thomas McCarthy] demonstrates a delicate, irresistible touch when it comes to lonely, eccentric characters, but he widens his canvas with a small, resonant story that could be ripped from today's headlines.

Love Songs (2007) Pam Grady It's an uneven affair, but with the delightful Garrel at the center, it's also unexpectedly charming and occasionally even moving.

Breath (2007) Rudy Joggerst ...a tender romance between a dejected housewife and a mute death-row prisoner that is surprisingly compassionate and even offers up a few moments of comic relief.

Paranoid Park (2007) Ken Dubois The real reason to see Paranoid Park is to check out how Van Sant's visual style is evolving, as he's one of the few big directors willing to try something unusual, often with tremendous results.

2.5/4
Chop Shop (2007) Ken Dubois What you get in Chop Shop is a very good 12-year-old actor who simply cannot carry a 85-minute drama in which he is the center of every single scene.

2.5/4
Then She Found Me (2007) Bonnie Fazio If it's not a completely satisfying film, it's not a completely mediocre one, either. See it if the subject matter intrigues, or you're a fan of one or more of the actors.

The Band's Visit (2007) Pam Grady Eran Kolirin's fish-out-of-water comedy-drama is a real treat, often funny and genuinely moving.

27 Dresses (2008) Brie Beazley A flick that's the equivalent of a bridesmaid dress: colorful, fluffy, and ultimately stored away, forgotten.

Charlie Wilson's War (2007) Brie Beazley It's one of the better flicks of the Christmas movie season.

Gone Baby Gone (2007) Gary Goldstein While less successful than the similarly-themed Mystic River -- which was also adapted from a Lehane tome -- is still a cut above, thanks in large part to its many fine performances.

3/4
Broken (2006) Gary Goldstein Broken goes a bit heavy on the symbolism (naming the leads Hope and Will, for starters) and tries to stir up sympathy for characters who may not deserve it, but as cautionary tales go, it's worth a look.

Lars and the Real Girl (2007) Pam Grady Comic and moving (without being overly sentimental) and completely unique, Lars and the Real Girl is one of the best times anyone will have at the movies this year.

Control - Love Will Tear Us Apart (2007) Pam Grady Control is a haunting, evocative drama that stands as a fitting homage to the performer, his music, and his era.

Golda's Balcony (2007) Gary Goldstein Though, for today's movie-going audience, Golda's Balcony may have limited appeal, it's a moving and vital story with many satisfying moments.

Canvas (2006) Pam Grady Greco takes his biggest risk, perhaps, when he puts that boat in water with father and son manning the sails. It could be a mawkish scene that sinks everything that came before it, but like the watercraft that symbolizes so much, the movie remains afloat.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007) Timothy Knight For a narrative that's positively overflowing with dramatic intrigue, Elizabeth: The Golden Age is only fitfully compelling.

Terror's Advocate (2007) Timothy Knight A brilliantly shrewd and maddeningly elusive figure, controversial lawyer Jacques Vergs alternately fascinates and repulses in Barbet Schroeder's gripping documentary.

3/4
King Corn (2007) Gary Goldstein Well, it's certainly one of the less blatantly compelling subjects on the non-fiction circuit, and the doc has a lower-octane approach than most, but King Corn is surprisingly absorbing and amusing viewing.

We Own the Night (2007) Gary Goldstein We Own the Night may not feel any more special than watching a rerun of The Sopranos or The Wire, but as a serious adult crime yarn, you could do far worse.

1/4
The Final Season (2007) Timothy Knight So relentlessly earnest and maudlin it makes Hoosiers look like a Martin Scorsese film, The Final Season is the latest and worst sports-themed underdog story to get the big screen treatment.

Finishing the Game (2007) Gary Goldstein Call it a comic documentary, a true-life comedy, or a Hollywood satire, but however you karate chop this one, it's a kicky, clever, highly amusing romp.
