North (1994) Bob Fenster While North is sometimes amusing, the comedy is never sustained.

The Testament of Ann Lee (2025) Bill Goodykoontz It runs up against some rough patches during the telling of the story, but overall it is immensely enjoyable, an unflinching (and nonjudgmental) look at faith, no matter how bizarrely we may think it’s practiced.

The American President (1995) Bob Fenster The American President is sophisticated, witty and wonderful, an intelligent comedy that finds a wealth of humor in the unlikely dual pursuit of the presidency and romance.

Misery (1990) Bob Fenster Misery is a gripping, if predictable, thriller.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) Jim Lindstrom Pays more attention to good acting, realistic background, and logical construction than most science-fiction offerings.

Dead Man's Wire (2025) Bill Goodykoontz Van Sant, working from a script by first-time screenwriter Adam Kolodny, is a little fuzzy on the details of societal cause and effect. But he gets great performances from his actors.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) Bill Muller Much will be made of McKellen's performance, as it should be, considering his near perfect portrayal of the powerful spellcaster. Fresh off an excellent turn as Magneto in X-Men, he simply melts into the part.

Stand by Me (1986) Marsha McCreadie Stand by Me is a particularly strong disappointment because it promises so much yet makes few strides, even within its small terrain.

Out of the Past (1947) Republic Staff Taut drama, paced by excellently sustained suspense, marks Out of the Past.
Posted Jan 09, 2026Edit critic review
Alice in Wonderland (1951) Jim Lindstrom Grown-ups partial to the spirit of Lewis Carroll's nonsense and Tenniel's illustrations probably will walk out feeling varying shades of disappointment, but not the youngsters.

The Princess Bride (1987) Marsha McCreadie The problem with the movie, though it has some fine fillips and witty asides, is that it is predictable, overall. The Princess Bride is corny. And it's simply not as touching as it might be.

The Sure Thing (1985) Marsha McCreadie the central idea of The Sure Thing is a cute one.

Confessions of a Nazi Spy (1939) Republic Staff "Confessions of a Nazi Spy" is powerfully dramatic and intensely absorbing.

Marty Supreme (2025) Bill Goodykoontz “Marty Supreme” is breakneck, it’s nerve wracking and it is above all entertaining as all get out. It makes you eager to see what Chalamet’s going to do next.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) Michael Maza Wallace works in indictments of American television and the current state of parenting that are far more compelling than anything in Halloween or Halloween II.

Hook (1991) Bob Fenster Steven Spielberg's glorification of childhood lost and found is a daunting dish concocted for people who like their desserts ladled up hot and thick.

Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025) Bill Goodykoontz The attention to detail is stunning... I found myself wondering, how do they do this? But I shouldn't have been wondering that. I should have been wondering what was going to happen next.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (2025) Bill Goodykoontz It’s fun, it’s smart and yes, it actually does have something to say.

Big Top Pee-wee (1988) Marsha McCreadie Though there are moments of fine silliness, Big Top collapses.

The Abyss (1989) Bob Fenster Without a break in the action, The Abyss takes us through a dazzling display of gadgetry and instrumentation -- both human and alien.

True Lies (1994) Bob Fenster True lies isn't as bad as Last Action Hero, but it's not half as hot as Speed.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) Bob Fenster Terminator achieved its legacy as one of the best science-fiction films of all time through its originality. Terminator 2 achieves most of its impact through sheer size and firepower.

Eternity (2025) Bill Goodykoontz It all boils down to whether you want to spend time with these characters. I think you will. Not for eternity, but a couple of hours sounds about right.

Hamnet (2025) Bill Goodykoontz It is devastating and magnetic and most of all brilliant. Don’t miss it.

4/5
Wicked: For Good (2025) Bill Goodykoontz At some point we see beyond the flying monkeys and the spells and brooms and lavish production numbers and see the film for what it really is — the relationship between Glinda and Elphaba, and the sacrifices they make for each other.

Peeper (1975) Mike Petryni Caine is excellent. His is droll without droning, bemusing without bewildering and low-key without being lethargic.
Posted Nov 22, 2025Edit critic review
The Wiz (1978) Mike Petryni "The Wiz" is a multimillion-dollar crashing bore and maybe the gloomiest movie-musical entertainment ever.

4/5
Die My Love (2025) Bill Goodykoontz The definition of “movie star” is pretty fluid, but in “Die My Love,” it’s clear why Jennifer Lawrence is one.

Christy (2025) Dina Kaur "Christy" is worth watching, if only to see an almost unrecognizable Sweeney flex her acting muscles.

Bugonia (2025) Bill Goodykoontz It is to Plemons’ credit that he instills a character who could have been a one-note nut case with emotional complexity.

Predator 2 (1990) Bob Fenster It is a disgusting piece of repulsive filth and the people who made it should be held criminally liable for contributing to the delinquency of minors.
Posted Oct 31, 2025Edit critic review
Predator (1987) Marsha McCreadie Taking some elements from Commando and some from The Terminator, Schwarzenegger has stripped down the films to their pertinent, crowd-pleasing parts and simply repeated those parts.

Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere (2025) Bill Goodykoontz It’s an imperfect film, obviously, though to Springsteen fantatics (that, I am not) it’ll be a godsend.

Shelby Oaks (2023) Bill Goodykoontz It’s when Mia starts actively following clues that things get dumb — or at least disjointed.

If I Had Legs I'd Kick You (2025) Bill Goodykoontz Bryne’s performance is so brilliantly unhinged, such a thing of chaotic beauty, that the film would be worthy of study anyway. Bronstein makes it something more.

Stephen King's It (1990) Elin Jeffords Scares are few, the best being a sink the belches gore.

Desert Hearts (1985) Marsha McCreadie Add Desert Hearts to the current crop of gay films, which are hip, honest and knowing about the gay world without being either preachy or self-conscious.

The Celluloid Closet (1995) Bob Fenster This is an educated analysis on a social issue, not tabloid titilation.

My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) Marsha McCreadie It shows that no matter how particular or localized a story line may be, if it's handled with charm and perspicacity it can fan out to capture intelligent viewers.

2.5/5
Anemone (2025) Bill Goodykoontz It’s sort of like a two-hour acting class from Day-Lewis. Intriguing, sure, but that’s not what you’re paying for.

Tron (1982) Michael Maza In Tron, the computers perform admirably. The people, however, do not.

The Lost Bus (2025) Meredith G. White All in all, "The Lost Bus" is a compelling, well-acted and mostly well-directed disaster drama. It's fine for what it is, but Greengrass could have dialed up the disaster and the drama.

Casper (1995) Bob Fenster ...Casper is not Ghostbusters, and it's not The Addams Family. But it does have enough slapstick to amuse kids - and parents - who have a goofy sense of humor.

Boogie Nights (1997) Bob Fenster Anderson offers a warped perspective on the pursuit of the American dream and on the shallowness in the soul of show business.

Hard Eight (1996) Bob Fenster The real mystery here is how first-time writer/director Paul Anderson persuaded anyone to put up money for this movie. He may have no talent for making movies, but he has an amazing talent for getting a movie made that shouldn't have been.
