Critics Consensus

The blood pours freely in Argento's classic Suspiria, a giallo horror as grandiose and glossy as it is gory.

What makes [Suspiria] especially effective is how they use horror to make a point about educational institutions' enforcement of gender hegemony to interrogate conventional femininity. Go to Full Review

What lingers is not a sense of evil but exhilaration in how far Argento and his fellow filmmakers were willing to go to shock and delight; the movie's sheer exuberance is the cinematic equivalent of a blood transfusion. Go to Full Review

Argento accomplishes so much simply through lighting and music - which goes a long way to compensate for the stilted dialogue and awkward character interactions. Go to Full Review

The dialogue is kind of goofy at times, but to me, that is part of the charm. My problem with Suspiria is that with a run time of only an hour and 40 minutes, it somehow feels like a 2 hour + movie. Go to Full Review

Suspiria is abrasive, corny in all the right ways, and a blast from start to finish. Go to Full Review

Cherish H @RT08966500 1 hr ago I watched this movie a couple of years ago and recently watched it again, and my impression of this movie is the same: a good movie. Before I watched the movie the main reasons were that it is a scary movie and the ballet. When watching it, I had to remind myself it was made in the 70s and the different way they used to film movies compared to today. This did play a part in the scariness of the movie for me but a movie that I was okay with watching again. See more Aidai T @ayiii 1 day ago I think Suspiria is a very colorful and scary horror movie. I liked the strange music, bright colors, and creepy ballet school because they made the movie feel like a nightmare. The story was sometimes confusing, but the atmosphere kept me interested. I also liked how the school looked beautiful but had a dark secret. Overall, it was a creative and disturbing film. The story follows Suzy, a young dancer who arrives at a mysterious ballet school and slowly discovers that something supernatural is happening there. The violence is shocking, but the movie’s colorful style makes it feel almost unreal. I also liked how the school seemed beautiful on the outside but hid something terrifying underneath. See more Ashamatronic H @Ashley_Howard 6 days ago Something about the score was really unsettling to me, especially the moments with the heavy drums and the vocalist hitting the higher notes. Making the murder scenes especially unsettling despite the older effects. The overall style of the film feels like if Tim Burton had more color, more graphic violence, and no Danny Elfman to lighten the mood. I'm not a fan of this movie in the same way I don't like A Quiet place because of how well it executes its premise and unsettles me. So I think it's worth a watch to anyone that's a fan of stylistic horror or thriller. See more Teddy B @RT90521672 Sep 15, 2026 A candy-coated fairy-tale nightmare, starring Argento's remarkable visual eye above any cast member or admittedly thin plot beat. See more Steve F @w0x0f Sep 8, 2026 I don't get the adoration for this movie. I bought it as a blind buy because I liked Jessica Harper in other works, but the plot here is so bad and the "horror" so mundane I just can't enjoy it. This and a couple of others have put me off blind buys. See more Romas M @Romas Sep 5, 2026 Greetings from Lithuania. "Suspiria" (1977), written and directed by a legendary Italian horror genre director Dario Argento is a good movie, which is equally a good and involving movie first, and then a pretty solid and creepy horror film as well. Acting was good here and lead actress Jessica Harper did a pretty good job. Directing by Dario Argento was his best in here for me I think. This film has also solid and involving script. There are some pretty creepy sequences, although this is not the scariest movie ever by far. And the music by the way was very, very good. Set design was outstanding. I've revisited this movie in 2026 on newly restored 4K UHD with Dolby Atmos. This film looks stunning. Colors are gorgeous, and sets were amazing. Sound design is also amazing. Overall, "Suspiria" is well written, directed and paced horror movie. I was involved into story first and then came some chills. It's not the best horror movie, but a truly solid movie overall.
