Bert (James DeBello), a college student vacationing with friends in the mountains, mistakenly shoots a local man (Arie Verveen) with a skin infection while hunting in the woods. Panicking, he abandons the scene and leaves the man for dead. When the man stumbles into a reservoir, he infects the water supply, and soon one of Bert's friends becomes infected. The friends struggle to stop the contagious, flesh-eating disease while on the run from a group of ornery backwoods locals out for revenge.

What Cabin Fever does really well is tap into people’s innate fear of infection and sickness. The concepts behind this fast moving disease are alarming and are something we are now all intimately familiar with following the pandemic.

They could have easily shaved about 10-15 minutes from the middle, but the film gets things rolling so quickly that I'm able to forgive that. A unique plot device does a great deal of heavy lifting throughout. The victims are a bit interchangeable, but they have more defining characteristics than usual to be expected of films like this. Their interpersonal conflicts are vapid, but satisfying to watch play out. They successfully painted a grim picture of a small area affected by the conflict, & occasionally even go the length to illustrate how the townspeople are affected personally. Takes a smidgen to get to the pressure-cooker increase, but when the moments come they really come. Various cheesey tropes/bad fx of the time notwithstanding, actively stands with various modern films today. A joy.

This was not a good movie. It was bad writing, bad acting, and bad story. Usually I can't tell what's bad in a movie, but I could tell in this one. How is this a cult classic? It's just lame! This is my 500th review! Woo hoo! What an achievement. I'm so proud of myself. Let's go to 1000!

The characters are annoying, so annoying that I didn't give a phokk what happened to them. Glad when they died. I wasn't bored, but it was badly written and not scary.
