Critics Consensus

Despite arresting visuals and strong lead performances, The New World suffers from an unfocused narrative that will challenge viewers' attention spans over its 2 1/2 hours.

All [Malick's] trademarks are present and correct: the swaying grass, the gurgling rivers, the trees, the birds, the internal monologues. They all fit. Go to Full Review Matt Zoller Seitz House Next Door Mar 17, 2011

If I think I'm mostly going to keep coming back to [the 172-minute] cut (and I do hope, someday soon, for a Mr. Arkadin-like 3-cuts comparative DVD set) it's because it feels most fully realized. Go to Full Review Elissa Suh Moviepudding (Substack) Dec 23, 2022

Snow drifts bleed into slight white flowers dotting branches, ladders lead toward the empty vast sky, men eat men, men betray and war with one another, and love exists... Go to Full Review David Walsh World Socialist Web Site Feb 14, 2021
Malick has kept his distance from history and contemporary events. He pays a price for his 'timelessness.' There is little developed sense of the contemporary world and its specific problems in his film. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Ketemama B. @Ketemama May 23, 2026 It had the right ingredients. Great cast,, beautiful scenery and an interesting true story to base a screenplay on. But sadly it does not perform. I had to quit halfway through. Storyline focused 80% on the relationship between Smith and Pocahontas. There was so much other interesting material that they could have portrayed. I'm a history buff so I was really looking forward to seeing this. Having just got back from a trip to Jamestown. But it didn't pan out. See more Nikki Z. @moviestar0013 Mar 2, 2026 So beautiful. One of my favorite movies. See more Greg S @ManhattanProject Feb 19, 2026 Beautiful movie. Worth reading some wikipedia about Smith and the crew who landed in Virginia before watching. See more Peter B @RT58516657 Feb 7, 2026 Desperately slow pace, but with inexplicable jumps in the narrative so you need to guess what happened in the missing sections. Just bad storytelling, which despite the pretty scenery makes an frustrating experience. See more Patrick S @PatrickStruik Dec 13, 2025 The beautiful but sad story of Pocahontas. See more thiago s @Thiagostone Nov 27, 2025 Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são fracas, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom See more Read all reviews
