Using his love for comics as inspiration, teenager Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) decides to reinvent himself as a superhero -- despite a complete lack of special powers. Dave dons a costume, dubs himself "Kick-Ass," and gets to work fighting crime. He joins forces with the father/daughter vigilante team of Big Daddy and Hit Girl, then befriends another fledgling crime-fighter called Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), but a scheming mobster soon puts their alliance to the test.

Critics Consensus

Not for the faint of heart, Kick-Ass takes the comic adaptation genre to new levels of visual style, bloody violence, and gleeful profanity.

Find one review that doesn't say that Hit Girl steals the show. She gets the best scenes, and actually complicates the plot... So, I guess you don't have to pass on Kick-Ass.

The plot doesn't add up to much, but doesn't have to, as this is a film defined by its high-energy, go-for-it-whatever, convention-toppling spirit.

Even as other elements of the narrative don’t shine so brightly ... one cannot deny the significance of this film on both Vaughn’s career and all the superhero films (subversive or not) that followed.

3/4

Given the safe, PG-13-rated tenor of most superhero movies today, something offbeat (and R-rated) like Kick-Ass comes as a shock, albeit a welcome one.
