Ellie Carter has never met the man who calls himself her husband, doesn't recognize the girl who calls her mother, and can't remember the life she is told is her own. Afflicted by violent seizures that reset her memory without warning, she is trapped in a cyclical nightmare, struggling to uncover the horrifying truth of her existence--before she forgets it all over again.

Critics Consensus

A twisted memory play whose labyrinthine structure can be as disorienting for the audience as it is for its heroine, Affection's most lasting impression may be Jessica Rothe's terrific lead performance.

This nifty little movie keeps you guessing and when it eventually shows its hand, there’s still plenty of mileage left in the characters.

The lensing and production design are similarly generic, save for a handful of inspired shots that, again, provide glimmers of a clearer vision than the unevenly applied one we ultimately get here.

Affection is trying to be a lot of interlocking genre pieces at once, and to the filmmaker’s credit, they’re able to pull all of it together, even if just barely.

It's a heartbreaking situation, well-acted by Rothe, but it doesn't leave the narrative much room to manoeuvre.

For a 90-minute film, Affection crawls, squandering the many opportunities to sidestep its messaging and deliver solid scares and thrills. The premise was there, but too many misfires stop this film from hitting the mark.

Meza proves adept at creating suspense and unease, but Affection is eventually betrayed by its own internal logic that at times seems inconsistent and difficult to follow.

I liked that it told a good story without hitting hard on the gore. The opening setup definitely kept you guessing. We had questions after the movie was over because it didn't try to explain everything which was great. The end was satisfying. Good story and the scenes looked great. Worth seeing! I think it is an easy one to rewatch which I rarely feel with movies these days.

Subtract 3 & 1/2 stars because I did not understand the technology involved in the cloning process. I guess it is explained about 1/3rd of the way through, but there was too much complicated info given too quickly. Otherwise, it was well made: the acting, the photography, etc.

One of the best surprises of the year! It will keep you guessing and the performances are all incredible. Highly recommend for any genre fans or fans of mysteries.

The idea was interesting, even if not exactly original, but the execution didn't work that well for me. It became unnecessarily complicated and confusing, and I never really connected with the female lead. There were some good ideas here, but the movie didn't quite know how to bring them together.
