For Aline Dieu, nothing in the world matters more than music, family and love. Her powerful and emotional voice captivates everyone who hears it, including successful manager Guy-Claude Kamar, who resolves to do everything in his power to make her a star. As Aline climbs from local phenomenon to bestselling recording artist to international superstar, she embarks on the two great romances of her life: one with the decades-older Guy-Claude and the other with her adoring audiences. Two-time César Award winner Valérie Lemercier plays Aline from ages five to 50 in a fictional musical dramedy freely inspired by the life of Celine Dion.

Critics Consensus

An unforgettable blend of the conventional and the singularly strange, Aline is definitely odd, but it's also oddly entertaining.

There are no insights here, only lavishly budgeted cosplay.

Initially strange, then mildly amusing, and eventually just kind of whatever, Francophone musical success story Aline is the very definition of neither one thing nor the other.

There's a lot of affection in this portrayal... I wish it had stuck with the strength of its initial weird convictions throughout, though.

Aline is a biopic freely inspired by the life of Celine Dion that’s, in most cases, on the brink of becoming an intentional farce.

Aline is the Goldschläger of musical biopics: unappetizing and decadent in all the wrong ways, but too absurd to not sample once.

Aline is a conundrum and a contradiction. More than any other recent biopic, Aline soldiers through all of the cliches and plot devices we’ve seen repeated ad nauseum. Yet, there’s a bizarre core that spins every scene on the axis.

I really enjoyed learning about Celine Dion's life and career. I am a fan of her music, but I didn't know anything about her beyond the tabloid headlines about her marriage to her much-older husband. I thought this was a believable and sensitive portrayal of not just a superstar but a woman, mom, sister, and daughter.

Extraordinaria forma de la directora presentar la historia de Celine, aunque no me gustó que hiciera de niña, si hizo un excelente trabajo como Celine adulta. Muy acertado los vestuarios, sucesos históricos y personalidad de Céline.

Overall, while Aline tells an uplifting journey with fun, quirky or romantic moments, it also has moments that are forced and cliché. The pacing is significantly up and down, radically changing from something exciting to something that's dull and predictable. The choice to use an adult head for the younger portion of the back story in the first act is also an unwise choice. Considering the film is an unofficial biopic of the life of Celine Dion, I hoped for something far more touching and heartfelt.

Tried watching, but it’s in French, and I couldn’t get the English subtitles to turn on in Amazon

Frankly, I don t understand the reviewer. This is a very good movie, at the border of the biopic. It s a great story, very close to Céline Dion's story. And it just works! I really enjoyed it. Sometimes, you have the impression the critics' crowd follow the first 2-3 reviews.
