A heartfelt retelling of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic children's story Anne of Green Gables, this Canadian telemovie wonderfully captures all the elements of its young red-haired protagonist. Go to Full Review

Mary M @MMovies Jan 19 I watched this with an open mind, very willing to allow it to stand on its own instead of comparing this adaption to the original series. Still, I failed to connect with the abbreviated storyline (much of what makes these characters so memorable are the events and conversations that influence their lives). Too much was omitted/edited out and the storyline became diluted by unnecessary modern day additions (like Matthew’s struggle with dementia and Anne’s childhood trauma flashbacks). I’m not sure who made the casting decisions but Ballantine did not feel genuine in the role of Anne Shirley. The star that shone the brightest was Marilla’s character. Sara Botsford took on the character and truly made it her own. I enjoyed every scene she was in. The rest of the cast did the best they could with less than great screenwriting. See more Jessica F Aug 18 An enjoyable, yet heavily truncated version of the story of Anne Shirley. I have a great fondness for the mid-80s version & this makes for a decent substitution available currently for free. As a PBS production, it's done quite well with the story & cast. This is #3 on my list of favorite Anne Shirley tales. #1 being the 80s version & #2 being Anne With an E from Netflix. I haven't read the book in its entirety, but this movie was well made and had some nice performances. I don't have anything to compare this to, but I did enjoy Martin Sheen. He was the only actor I recognized but he was very good in this. I know a lot of people hate this version but I did end up crying at the end, so that says a lot for me. See more andrew s 06/06/2020 The movie attempted to incorporate a lot of elements from the book, but was unable to tie them together adequately, making many elements of the plot seem like non-sequiturs. It felt rushed. See more 01/05/2019 The interpretation is so uterly bad I couldn't even get to the end. Everything seems to be monochrome without any excitement although the book gets you excited every time you read it. See more Read all reviews
