It is a story fit for the second Elizabeth, though it has perhaps one minor fault: the first two hours. Go to Full Review

Some plucky performance don't manage to embue this historical drama with the regal spectacle the source material deserves. Go to Full Review

Anne of the Thousand Days is a stunning-acted, sumptuous, grand-scale widescreen drama of the royal bed chamber and political intrigues that created the Church of England. Go to Full Review

As a study of historical figures morbidly clashing over sovereignty, the film is certainly educational and a fine reproduction of 16th-century events. Go to Full Review

It's all court flummery, simplified Tudor connivings, Anthony Quayle looking like a querulous crayfish. Go to Full Review

Peter V 3d The film underscores that power’s most dangerous quality is its ability to rewrite the narrative of right and wrong. Henry convinces himself that God endorses his desires; his advisors reshape truth to fit royal expectation. Anne of the Thousand Days thrives on moral ambiguity, presenting a Tudor court where no character’s motives are entirely pure or entirely corrupt. Against this backdrop, the few who take a principled stand become the film’s moral anchors. Anne of the Thousand Days stands out as a sumptuous production. It is rich in visual detail and emotional intensity. At the centre of this opulence are the commanding performances of Richard Burton and Geneviève Bujold, whose dynamic interplay gives the story its pulse. Burton’s Henry VIII is imposing yet wounded, while Bujold’s Anne is fierce, intelligent, and heartbreakingly human. It becomes not just a historical drama, but a compelling exploration of power, passion, and the cost of ambition. If they had kept the screenplay more in line with the original play this might of at least been more unique.
