Critics Consensus

Anomalisa marks another brilliant and utterly distinctive highlight in Charlie Kaufman's filmography, and a thought-provoking treat for fans of introspective cinema.

Kaufman has created a very smart movie, and I ended up liking it for what it was. It is not a heartwarming romp. It is a dense, sneaky movie about narcissism, cruelty, and Lisa's own shy resilience.

Anomalisa is fascinating, and I cannot say I was ever bored by anything that Kaufman and Johnson were choosing to show me.

By the time Michael and Lisa are up in that hotel room, trying so heroically to say the right thing, the picture has transcended its gimmicks.

…Charlie Kaufman’s stop-motion/puppet film is an anomaly; it might be a romance, it might be an anti-romance…the meaning is hard to pin down….whatever it signifies, Anomalisa is imaginative, brilliantly executed and heartbreakingly sad…

Anomalisa is one of the most unique animated films I've ever seen, and arguably the most "human" film of the year.

Examining "Anomalisa" for the romance and humanity is more arduous than liberating for what Kaufman is trying to say about inspiration.

Anomalisa is an absolute great film and I think he deserved the Oscar more than inside out

Drab and dull screenplay centering mostly on humans hidden behind (realistic) puppets (not the Jim Henson kind). They are drowning in a sea of their own angst. Unlike Shakespeare's King Lear, the characters don't have any insightful or revealing things to say. Spend your time reading the Bard instead.

Um, what to say about this one... Let's just say this movie is only for adults. I don't really want to see it again. Really cool and unique though.
