Critics Consensus

With a hopelessly hokey plot and unintentionally hilarious dialogue, Battle of the Year is flimsy even by the standards of the dance movie genre.

The young dancers' undeniable skill and athleticism is squandered in this formulaic, overly familiar dance movie. Go to Full Review Simon Braund Empire Magazine Nov 11, 2013

In particular, as mentioned, the dance sequences are a mess, which is the kiss of death for a film in this genre. Go to Full Review Allen Almachar The MacGuffin Jul 23, 2020

Instead of allowing his film to be uplifted by dance, Lee burdens it with a cringe-worthy dramatic narrative. Go to Full Review Tara Thorne The Coast (Halifax, Nova Scotia) Apr 11, 2018

Characters are not developed enough. You don't feel for them. Result being, you end up as mere spectators instead of well-wishers. While the film preaches 'passion' for whatever you do, it is exactly what seems to be missing from it. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Jan 2, 2020 I really enjoyed the movie although it does get a lot better as the movie progresses See more Nov 7, 2019 Josh Holloway is coaching a put together break crew as USA must step up on the international scene. Loads of b-boys practice in a military / American Idol like setting, as they fall out one by one untill the team is ready. They show muscles in paris where the annual Battle of the Year event take place, but there are not many surprizes here. A sloppy film in most ways, and so very typical. I dig breakdance but I am no expert on the matter. It seem to get some things right, other things are way off the real thing. Not a god film, but I never expected it to be and I'm glad I just saw it after some channel surfing for some backround entertainment while kicking back some beers. 3 out of 10 moves. See more Oct 15, 2019 Bland and kind of pointless for it to be in 3D....But some of the dance moves were pretty impressive. See more Mar 17, 2019 The dancers have solid skills but........ How has no one noticed the obvious carbon copy of the movie "Best of the Best"??? Even down to the bar fight people. See more Apr 14, 2017 This was such a good movie I loved it See more Feb 2, 2016 Where the hell they found people willing to spent their money to make such a unbelievably rubbish movie??? Credit goes to all the dancers (who can really dance), are all amazing B boy. What the hell is Chris Brown doing in this movie? See more Read all reviews
