Sometimes it concentrates everything left unsaid. Richard Linklater lets the reunion unfold with the urgency of real time, while Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy reveal years of longing through pauses, glances and defenses that slowly collapse. What makes the film so moving is that it never treats love as permission to ignore responsibility. Its restraint leaves room for possibility without turning a profound connection into an excuse to betray other people. Jesse and Celine may be forced to reconsider the lives they have built, but following the heart should still require honesty and difficult choices. The film is romantic because it respects both the intensity of feeling and the consequences of acting on it. This was 75 short minutes about catching up from the previous movie. We get to see what they are up to and where they've been the past 9 years. Brilliant. The Notebook, Shakespeare in Love, The Lover and this (honorable mention to Reality Bites. I know it's probably more a rom com (Shakespeare too), but the last five minutes makes me want to genre jump it). I do enjoy the whole before trilogy, but I do feel each preceding title is better than the one that follows. No bad ones for sure, but could've been happier with Before Midnight. You can definitely just watch this one and be done with it should you want. Each title really has its own ending that could've tied the story up enough.
