Critics Consensus

Visually stunning and narratively satisfying, Blade Runner 2049 deepens and expands its predecessor's story while standing as an impressive filmmaking achievement in its own right.

If every new film made today is to a greater or lesser degree an echo box of past possibilities, what's notable is how much Villeneuve gives those echoes room to breathe and to be new.

In the end, for all its pleasures, it's difficult to view Blade Runner 2049 as anything but an elaborate echo of the original, neither true sequel nor reboot, unclear of its own identity.

The film dares to be ambiguous, but ambiguity is a bad fit with the current critical mood that art must be prescriptive rather than reflective.

It’s important to state from the outset that Blade Runner 2049 keeps faith with the original. There is a real artistry across this production. Unfortunately, it is when it comes to story that Blade Runner 2049 disappoints.

Is Blade Runner 2049 a masterpiece like its predecessor? Definitely not. It's not even a match for 2016's superb Arrival, the previous film from director Denis Villeneuve. Yet on its own terms, it's a dazzling achievement.

2049 is able to exist both as a masterful sequel and/or stand-alone film in the universe, which showcases Villeneuve’s massive skill as a storyteller and further validates him as one of the best visionaries of our generation.

The colours that pushed emotion were so well done. The characters felt beyond real and every small detail felt like it was a part of something bigger.

I LOVE THIS FILM!!!!!!!!! This was my most anticipated movie of 2017 and man did I enjoy it in theaters then. Now rewatching it again, this time with popcorn, a Pepsi, and crunch buncha chocolate, man did I have a GREAT TIME!!! Very nostalgic to when I first saw it 9 years ago. Ruthie movie is ART. It defines cinema and Science Fiction as a whole. Directed by one of my favorite movie directors and cinematography by one of my favorite cinematographers. Grammar performances and music, the list goes on!! This movie will turn 10 years old next year, 2027, it better get rereleased and in IMAX 🔥🔥🎬🎬🎥🎥🤖🤖🐎🦄

What a noisy slog of a movie. Desperate in need of more editing. It bears the name of original classic & is a sequel but just not memorable enough to be a classic like original. The final battle is some underwater wrestling match? Seriously? I saw this as a double feature anniversary showing & this pales in comparison to original in everything - story, fx, action, & especially direction. Director likes Brutalist architecture visuals but it’s eh for me as with his Dune movies. If they show stills from each movie, you can’t tell which is which. Also, really muddied story telling & weird set pieces done just to be weird. Scene where they show Elvis performance at a home theater is a good example of something that doesn’t really work because you want to hear & see Elvis performance on that screen but you can’t because it’s paused every few seconds due to damage on building meanwhile you supposed to watch fight between Ford & Gosling? Fuhgettaboutit! I rather watch Elvis perform!
