What to Know

Critics Consensus

Brooklyn Rules' premise is old hat now, but strong performances from Alec Baldwin and the supporting cast are reasons enough to watch.

A sometimes funny, occasionally maudlin coming-of-age dramedy that wants to be Goodfellas but might have been called Mild in the Streets. Go to Full Review Stephen Holden New York Times Sep 22, 2007

However authentic and heartfelt this film's depiction of life on the meaner streets of the Northeast corridor may be, it doesn't begin to match The Sopranos' epic vision of violence, class struggle and upward mobility in a barbarous culture. a fuzzy film sporting more bad Brooklyn accents and mob-movie cliches than Knockaround Guys which, all things considered, is hard to do. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Jun 3, 2018 Five stars because 1. They made Freddie Prinze Jr look and sound handsome with that kick ass Brooklyn accent. 2. That's a very good part for Scott Caan son of James Caan. 3. Jerry Ferrara did a good job as the fat and sensitive guy. 4. Alec Baldwin did good as the tough boss of Brooklyn. And 5. Mena Suvari did good as psych expert Ellen and the girlfriend of Freddie's character as Michael turner. But I still don't understand why all the other characters have last names but Mena suvari's character doesn't. See more Oct 26, 2016 I enjoyed this film as it captured my attention and I was able to take in and understand most of what was going on. A good film overall See more Sep 30, 2016 Terrible. Painfully bad. A poor Bronx Tale ripoff - The story is weak, the acting is bad. None of the actors have the proper accent. Did anyone do any research for this movie? See more Feb 17, 2016 Loved it, great ending and Mena is hot! See more Sep 7, 2014 Worth a watch. Some Ropey accents though See more Jan 17, 2014 Essentially a watered-down, 1980s-set "A Bronx Tale." Undone by an overly-familiar narrative and some bad casting choices. Alec Baldwin and Scott Caan are two bright spots. Freddie Prinze Jr. narrating the film with a Brooklyn accent? Not so much.
