A young boy dreams of a different life. His classmates spurn him and his father tries to force him to the father's version of reality. A film maker recognizes the boy's aspirations and helps him live a true life. Throw in fascinating characters along the way and the answer to the mysterious sadness felt by the family and you have a heartbreakingly lovely movie. I don't know why it didn't receive more attention when it was released, but that's Hollywood for you. It features some outstanding performances, gorgeous settings, and a beautiful story. Wes (Jacob Tremblay is an eccentric young boy. His parents, Alise (Vera Farmiga) and Connor (Marton Csokas) are having a difficult time moving on after the loss of a child. One day Wes decides he's actually a Mongolian goat herder. At first his parents humor him, but eventually they have to come to terms with the fact that he really believes it. Wes befriends Ismail (Sure Sharma), a twenty-something man who works at the local car wash. Ismail dreams of becoming a filmmaker, and begins documenting Wes's story. After posting clips of Wes on social media, the young man becomes an international celebrity. Then, Wes is off to Mongolia with his mom to meet with his peeps. And of course, Ismail is along for the ride to document the journey. This is one of those films that you can't help but fall in love with. It's an emotional, tear-jerker that'll have you puddling up.more than once. The actors all do a great job, especially Jacob Tremblay. I think we're going to see a lot more of this young lad. Bravo! See more John B @RT17595747 05/06/2023 I enjoyed this one overall even thought it was a bit quirky, still a good story about a family struggling to get through family challenges together. See more 08/03/2020 A seemingly successful family is in crisis after losing an infant daughter. The successful businessman father does the only thing he knows, trying to "manage" it. Their 8 year old son's reaction is an epiphany that he's a Mongolian goat herder. While the mother & older sister try to cope, an Indian immigrant & aspiring film maker wants to help the boy realize his fate running into a wandering former nun (Virginia Madsen dropping yet ANOTHER gem of a performance). The mother frustrated with the father's reaction to it all boils over and takes the film maker & her son on an impromptu Mongolian adventure that eventually brings them all together again. That rarest of things today, this is an entirely original work of art! Beautifully acted by a brilliant ensemble, the writing is even better. The only downside for me was the reminder of how much derivative crap & sequels Hollywood lives on! See more 01/14/2020 ‘Burn your Maps'. A gem movie about how sometimes you have to pack your bags to find your way home. It's about the adventure of a boy who believes he is a Mongolian goat herder and his family who loves him. It's a quirky, funny, sweet movie about knowing who you are and not being afraid to follow your dreams. It also touches on the theme of grief and the journey of finding a new normal after the loss of a loved one. It's a healing, uplifting film.
