During the last nine years of writer Marcel Proust's (Jurgen Arndt) life, his only companion is housekeeper Celeste Albaret (Eva Mattes). As Proust's health declines, he retreats into his bedroom, waking up at four every afternoon to work on his epic novel, "Remembrance of Things Past." Celeste struggles to keep noises and distractions from interfering with Proust's concentration, only speaking with him when the author wants to recall his past or learn from her about the outside world.

What Celeste manages to do so well is show us how all the details of Celeste’s life shape and inform who she is and how she views herself. Go to Full Review

The Germanic approach to the French subject-matter seems too foreign and glum to make this biopic sparkle like champagne. Go to Full Review

Josh Y Aug 30 One of my favorite art house movies finally surfaced, of all places, on Tubi. It’s about Proust’s final months told through the eyes of his maid. Celéste is on one hand a quiet contemplative period piece with impeccable set scenes. OTOH, if you have ever read Proust or are familiar with his Remembrance of Things Past and how he raced to finish his great work in his final days, it is a gripping account of a great artist at work. Well worth downloading the app and watching it, even though there are ads - keep the mute button nearby. You can watch it as a guest without signing in to an account. See more Read all reviews
