Tom Baker (Steve Martin) and his wife, Kate (Bonnie Hunt), take their children for what they hope will be a relaxing summer at a lakeside resort. When the Bakers end up with the shoddiest unit imaginable, a clueless but well-meaning Tom struggles to repair it himself. To make matters worse, Tom's old nemesis -- Jimmy Murtaugh (Eugene Levy) -- and his similarly gigantic family appear on the scene and engage the Bakers in a not-so-friendly rivalry that threatens to spoil their trip.

Cheaper by the Dozen 2 leans much harder into cheesy humor and chaotic energy than the first film, making it feel louder, wackier, and more scattered overall. While the original already struggled a bit with balancing its large cast and story, this sequel amplifies that issue by throwing in multiple families and turning the plot into a competitive battle that sometimes feels overcrowded. The banter and goofy situations are fun, and there are moments of genuine charm, especially seeing younger versions of actors like Taylor Lautner before they became more famous. However, the movie suffers from having too many characters fighting for attention, which makes certain scenes feel overwhelming and others feel underdeveloped. Despite its flaws, the film is still an enjoyable family comedy with lighthearted energy, and while it isn’t a favorite, it delivers enough laughs and nostalgia to make it a decent, casual watch.

If you enjoyed the first film, Cheaper by the Dozen 2 expands its family adventures outside the household, focusing on a rivalry between Steve Martin vs Eugene Levy and his family. While this premise enhances the film’s concept, the story falls short of its potential due to its attempts to be more than it is. Grading: C
