A stylish, subversive thriller from suspense-maverick Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Cure, Pulse), concerning Yoshii, an ambitious, yet directionless, young factory worker from Tokyo who side hustles in the murky realm of black market reselling, cheating buyers and sellers alike. After swindling his way into loads of cash, he becomes slowly disconnected to humanity, moving out of the city, shunning his girlfriend, and hiring a devoted assistant. But after a series of mysterious, sinister incidents occur, he begins to suspect his former victims could be plotting the ultimate revenge. A master of carefully simmering tension to a bloody crescendo, Kurosawa delivers a searing portrait of digital greed and vengeance.

Critics Consensus

Writer-director Kiyoshi Kurosawa returns to the theme of technology being a haunting force with disturbing success in Cloud, a slow-burn examination of social media that ends with a bang.

Kurosawa’s steady control of mood and indefatigable narrative – if this becomes an action film, it ’s not geared to our titillation – prevent any of this from becoming didactic.

A story rich in dark humor, violence, and even unexpected flirtations with Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs. [Full review in Spanish]

A sneaky tale of savagery in the dehumanizing digital age, writer-director Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s “Cloud” is as bleak a warning as you’ll find in theaters this year.

Kurosawa keeps everything subtly off-kilter throughout, resulting in a morally complex and formally fascinating film that invites scrutiny and rewards patience as it ushers its viewers into Hell.

"Cloud" has a pointed edge that cuts those unprepared for the cognitive reorientation Kurosawa thinks we need.

Whether it’s the eerie atmosphere and introspective interrogation of 21st-century commerce and capitalism in Cloud’s first half, or the marked shift into a balls-to-the-wall action-thriller in the second, Kurosawa keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Great tension throughout with some comedic moments here and there.

"Cloud" is a fascinating movie in a lot of ways, and it is shot really well. The movie is a slow burn for sure, where most of the action and excitement don't really happen until the movie is halfway over. I do feel the setup is a bit long, but I genuinely enjoyed the second part of the movie so much. It is a strange movie to evaluate because I feel like I would just rewatch that half of the movie down the line. I still think there is a lot to unpack from a social commentary standpoint. Overall, it is a unique action movie that won't appeal to everyone, and even to me is just an okay experience, but an interesting one nonetheless.

The auteur’s ruthless precision with symbolic imagery and the unrelenting forward thrust of its philosophical inquiry – if this becomes a puzzle, it is not geared to our easy interpretation – prevents any of this from becoming pedantic. Ideas are not announced but embedded, not explained but embodied. One emerges not with answers, but with the far more valuable gift: a new set of questions that refuse to loosen their grip long after the final frame.

Looks great and is enjoyable, but I did not understand the motivation of any character.

If I could give this boring movie zero stars, I would. This is not how scammers act. I have never seen a scammer look so miserable in movies or TV shows. And the villain—his ‘boss’—was a good man; you would never guess he’s the final boss. Also, that kid he hired—what is he, Rambo or a yakuza member? I don’t know. The people who gave this movie full stars… are they watching something else, or am I blind?
