In his second cinematic adventure, the mighty warrior Conan (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is tricked into working for the scheming Queen Taramis (Sarah Douglas). Along with finding a mystical horn, Conan and his allies, which include the fierce fighter, Zula (Grace Jones), and the wisecracking sorcerer, Akiro (Mako), must protect the beautiful young Princess Jehnna (Olivia d'Abo). With deception and danger at every turn, Conan has to use all of his power to defeat the evil foes that stand in his way.

[My] affinity for Conan the Destroyer isn’t entirely due to nostalgia. This Hyborian Age expedition may be on the goofy side of the equation, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a heck of a lot of fun.

The first Conan movie, Conan the Barbarian, was a dark and gloomy fantasy about the shadows of prehistory. This second film is sillier, funnier, and more entertaining.

Overall, as a sequel, Conan the Destroyer successfully delivers an entertaining fantasy adventure that doesn't require much thinking. The dedication of the actors to the storyline and poorly written lines of dialogue is undeniable. Watching Conan and his crew fight through castles and against various monsters is enjoyable thanks to the remarkable visuals, the majestic sound effects and the epic score by Basil Poledouris. This film is pure fun and shouldn't be taken seriously.

The producers' idea to lower the violence and increase the humor results in a beautifully strange mishmash. I personally felt it came together very nicely, and visually it is unbelievably stunning, even 40 years later. More silly and odd stuff from emeritus Marvel editor Roy Thomas (who I recently saw in a Q&A at 2Rivers Con, and who was a funny guy and very candid). The seemingly random celebrity features are a little off-putting at first, but Grace Jones really was a great casting for this role. A lot more mid-80s humor than I expected, but it came together to make some real cine-magic.

I love Conan The Barbarian but wow this film is really bad, cheap looking sets, unimaginative plot, slow paced (not in a good way), bad dialogue and a guy in a bad rubber mask in one fight scene. You can see why Arnold Schwarzenegger didn't want to make a third one. Compared to the first Conan it seems they took all the magic edge of the sequel in comparison and softened the protagonist up a bit too much. It lacks excitement, even Red Sonja is way better than this.
