Rotten Tomatoes rankings suck. This movie deals with so many complex issues so delicately and the two leads have such fantastic chemistry that I don't understand how anyone could not give it five stars. The writing is also incredible and lines are delivered without much pomp and circumstance, but with all the genuine and authentic tone of real life happening in front of our eyes. The simplicity is perhaps the best understated value of this film, which has been engraved in my heart for years. Bravo to everyone involved in this emotional rollercoaster of best tv viewing! When I rewatch it as an adult: there’s a lot more below the surface that they could’ve unpacked in terms of mental health etc. but they would’ve had to give it an R rating and it would’ve lost it’s cute/young love appeal. It’s still a fun movie and an enjoyable watch. I think this movie knows what it is and therefore doesn’t dive too deep below the surface get to the raw subject of mentally unwell teen issues—otherwise the film would lose its target audience and not know what it is.
