Critics Consensus

Crimson Peak offers an engaging -- albeit somewhat slight -- diversion driven by a delightfully creepy atmosphere and director Guillermo del Toro's brilliant knack for unforgettable visuals.

This is headily sumptuous, seductive filmmaking, beautiful and grotesque, with the best-realised ghosts since del Toro’s own The Devil’s Backbone (2001).

What [Guillermo] del Toro had in mind when shooting Crimson Peak was probably a stylish gothic period piece in the same acclaimed lane as Pan's Labyrinth. Unfortunately, Crimson Peak fails to work on that level.

Not only did I love every silly, gothic, gorgeous minute of Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak, I'm actually suspicious of those who didn't.

Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak will likely only appeal to viewers unfamiliar with Jane Eyre or Henry James or Daphne du Maurier or, heck, even The Silence of the Lambs.

Chastain, Wasikowska, and Hiddleston do their best, but the writing of “Crimson Peak“ comes off far more slight than Del Toro’s previous work. It lives in the shadow of similar films, but with a far more unrelieved energy.

Gothic romance with notes of horror, bathed in the unreal and magical colors of a baroque Italian horror and brought to life by Guillermo Del Toro’s beating heart of compassion in the face of evil.

The film is a bit drawn out. But for fans of gothic films, vampires, and other wickedness, it's fine.

It's a visual masterpiece from start to finish, the ghostly ghouls and beautiful sets were definitely very though out and planned. The "plot twist" is kinda like huh? But I guess that's the goal. I love to see a smart and quick heroine in horror movies. Definitely one of Guillermo Del Toro's best gothic takes.

Excellent gothic fairy tale of sorts. The three main leads are extremely charismatic. It's not necessarily a predictable movie which makes it interesting. The sets and costumes are magnificent.

This is Too Long, and lacks pace... if it were shorter and/or more dynamic with at least ONE Twist it would have been far far better... it plods along in a very linniar fashion only held together by decent actors and the production budget... watchable at best...

No matter how hard I tried I just couldn't get into this one. Del Toro seems to be such a hit or miss director for me and this is one of his misses.
