Critics Consensus

While it may strike some viewers as slight, Cyrus is a successful hybrid of mainstream production values and the mumblecore ideals of directors Jay and Mark Duplass.

a sweet, modest, unremarkable film, propped up by seasoned actors playing quirky and "real." Go to Full Review Jason Bailey DVDTalk.com Feb 22, 2012
The potentially one-joke premise is given depth, complexity, darkness and pathos by the offbeat execution and the honest performances. Go to Full Review Charlotte O'Sullivan London Evening Standard Sep 15, 2010

Cast and crew seem committed to making a simple point: "unhealthily close" relationships can be enriching. And the result is a movie that feels both small and deep. Go to Full Review Sarah Vincent Sarah G Vincent Views Jun 12, 2024
If you shied away from “Cyrus” because you were worried that Reilly was stuck in a rut, especially since it was released a few years after “Step Brothers” (2008), don’t be. It is so much better, far more relatable, and realistic. Go to Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Aug 18, 2023

Cyrus has an uncomfortable effect that ultimately peels back to reveal a sensitive and insightful film Go to Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) Oct 19, 2022
Cyrus is so spontaneous that it sometimes gives the uncomfortable feeling of digging through foreign lives with the cameras complicity. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review Read all reviews

This movie would be one of many plausible reasons why people fear jumping back into the dating pool again during their mid-life years. See more Magnus O @RT03988920 Dec 2, 2024 Really hard to believe a guy would not run from a woman with that kinda emotional baggage. The kid is the very definition of a man child, a spiteful one at that. Some of the dialogue is really far fetched. For instance, if a kid told me his mom oversexualized when she wants to slow down; I would have to ask how and why do you know intimate details of your Mom’s sex life! I guess when you look like John Reilly, you have take the poon with the poison. See more Kyle M @RT77296778 Sep 9, 2024 Genuinely slight as indicated by little engagement, the Duplass brothers craftly hone their mumblecore approach with playful cinematography and natural characterization towards aspectual societal conflicts amid sincere chemistries, remarkably pulled off by the well-cast performatively soulful emittance.
