Alain E @AlainE May 6, 2026 The reception of this movie varies enormously and I am not sure I can understand why. Essentially one has to start watching and decide if they want to continue. The movie is structured as the recollections of a young boy who is growing without a father, surrounded by the five unmarried sisters of his mother. The place is Ireland and the time 1930s. Eventually their only brother joins them, who was a priest in Uganda but he appears to have developed early dementia. The dominant sister is played by Meryl Streep, but the other sisters are interpreted capably as well. It is overall a sad story presented without excessive sentimentality. The screen has almost a square shape which makes me think this was originally shot for television. In any event, it is very worthwhile presentation of people who cannot adapt to life’s circumstances. The father of the little boy makes a brief appearance, but instead of trying to help his son and his mother, sets as his goal to fight in the Spanish civil war See more Tim M @tgmacman Apr 26, 2024 Hackneyed presentation prevents Dancing at Lughnasa from being as poignant as it wants to, but a strong central cast puts life in its steps. It only feels tacked on to make the film more serious instead of letting it be just a pleasant stroll of a watch. If you're looking for all of that, you'll have to find another movie. This is a study of Irish life in the old days. Village life was quiet and slow, shaken by a few moments of madness. This is a movie about people (most of them women) who deserved something better. See more Feb 10, 2015 Meryl. With an Irish accent. See more Read all reviews
