After his girlfriend cheats on him, an unappreciated laborer floats away to a new life in a balloon-powered chair.

Critics Consensus

Danny Deckchair mines some earnest pleasure from a concept with its head in the clouds and two stars whose chemistry is grounded, but the comedy quickly runs out of air when the premise comes back down to the earth.

Balsmeyer may remind you of the guy at the party who, after one too many shots, puts a lampshade on his head. It's funny for maybe a moment -- until you realize, to your horror, that he doesn't know when to stop.

As for the charm factor, I can't think of any screen couple this year with more of such an elusive quality than Ms. Otto and Mr. Ifans.

The charm of it all wins us over, and while we watch the tired old twists and turns, we smile anyway.

[Jeff Balsmeyer's] playing it safe causes this beautiful opportunity of a film to crash just when it seems destined for the stratosphere.

Very quirky Australian comedy - romance. I laughed so much during the movie. Ifans is great actor; he is a chameleon and Otto is very cute.

What a strange little movie. And I'm not just talking about Rhys Ifans being cast as the leading man in a romantic comedy, I'm talking about the overall tone. Danny Deckchair is oddly likeable, with a positive message and enough humor to make you crack a few smiles. It's easy to see why this film flew under the radar, but if you get a chance to watch it, you should. You might just enjoy it.

When I first came to BC four years ago, I heard the phrase, "No worries". Then I saw the balloon stunt dufus in the Times Colonist. All these things have one thing in common: This movie. I love this movie. The balloon dufus should also be charged with plagiarism as well as mischief.
