When thugs employed by a crime boss lead a vicious assault on Dr. Peyton Westlake (Liam Neeson), leaving him literally and psychologically scarred, an emergency procedure allows him to survive. Upon his recovery, Wilder can find solace only by returning to his scientific work developing synthetic skin, and seeking revenge against the crime boss. He assumes a phantom avenger persona called Darkman, who, with malleable facial qualities, is able to infiltrate and sow terror in the criminal community.

Critics Consensus

Gruesome and deliciously broad, Sam Raimi's Darkman bears the haunted soulfulness of gothic tragedy while packing the stylistic verve of onomatopoeia springing off a comic strip page.

The picture escalates into absurdity and the last half hour, essentially a chase sequence, is marred by surprisingly cheesy special effects.

Neither the script, by five writers, nor the acting, by everyone, persuades.

Some of it's corny; some of it's unintentionally overwrought. But at least it's honest.

Darkman is a fantastic memorable film! One of my all time favorites which is criminally underrated! Seeing it in the theater with my son was an absolute joy!

Somewhat interesting concept but just could not get that into it. Perhaps it seemed too silly, corny, far fetched, laughable, and just was not very well done. However, I did like seeing a younger Liam Neeson in it. Don't understand the high rating... maybe it was better as a 1980s movie (which I generally enjoy but did not really enjoy this one). 2 stars.

I've been a fan since the day it was released at the movie theater I worked at. Excellent performances.

This movie really did a fantastic end to the 80's era with Sam Raimi as a good director. If you haven't watched it then watch it.

Besides the Bad Acting and Effects, it’s still a decent movie. Decent but Forgettable! Not Sam Raimi’s best work.
