Chris R @christr77 1 hr ago Amazing movie. I had never seen or heard of it until recently, and it has real staying power, the kind that leaves you thinking about it long after it ends. It shows the loyalty people have to one another in survival situations, and from what I've heard, it's an incredibly accurate portrayal of life aboard German U-boats. See more Glossoc C @Glosso Jul 18, 2026 Fantastic! Das Boot hasn't aged a day in the 44 years since its release. And yet it has. Few directors these days can find a studio to fund such a gut-wrenching film. Most of the shots are tight, giving the claustrophobic feeling of being in a submarine. One gets the impression the actors took a beating making this film. They don't appear to be acting so much as suffering in real time. One does not forget their tormented faces. The overall theme haunts many of us: What does it feel like to risk your life for an insane and dying cause? The lighting -- from red to blue to flashlights cutting through darkness -- works perfectly. The sub's crew answers the question: "How hard would you work to keep from drowning?" with a resounding: "Until we drop." For those of us raised on the righteous theme of "Germans were the bad guys," this film draws a striking contrast. Yes, they were the bad guys, but ordinary people sucked into the maelstrom of war suffered horribly and pointlessly. It feels intimate and real, not a melodrama seen from a distance but a personal experience that makes you sympathize with the German troops who had no choice but to fight for Hitler but were probably shunned for doing so after the war. I didn't even mind the length. See more Harrison B @clinthoward Jun 29, 2026 I'm only halfway through and am unsure if I'll finish. It's crazy that this film is so beloved while being so incredibly slow as well as being told from the perspective of literal nazis. That said, if you want a realistic depiction of war, because you're, for some reason, unaware that it's a mixture of intense fear and boredom, then I guess this will show you what it's like to work on a submarine. Not sure why this would be interesting to most people. See more Read all reviews
