Critics Consensus

Featuring outstanding work from an excellent cast, The Departed is a thoroughly engrossing gangster drama with the gritty authenticity and soupy morality we come to expect from Martin Scorsese.

The biggest draw, of course, are the star acts: Caprio, Damon and Mark Wahlberg in particular are electric.

Monohan’s boldest intervention in his source material, though, comes courtesy of Freud—closing Scorsese’s loop with The Sopranos and offering the director a darker, more contingent vision of the family than his stories of Italian America ever permitted.

DiCaprio is coiled and edgy, Damon alternates between charismatic and creepy, and Wahlberg, stealing the show, somehow turns surliness into an endearing character trait.

Great movie — Top 10 all-time for me. Acting, dialogue, pacing. Just so good. A little long, but every scene is important.

Honestly, this is one of my favorite movies ever, easily Top 5. I love the interweaving arcs between Billy and Colin, especially how it's not really quick cuts between the two. Scorsese seems to stick with each character for just long enough to keep the story going. I also love how there's no true good character in this movie as they all have some type of moral hang up.
