Critics Consensus

Fittingly named for a remake whose charms are dwarfed by its superior source material, Downhill is frequently -- and frustratingly -- less than the sum of its talented parts.

Downhill is best watched without having seen Force Majeure because the comparisons are so unflattering.

Downhill is a good example of a well-regarded foreign language film that translates badly as an American remake.

The film oversimplifies the complexities of the original, however contrived they might have been, and generally lacks Östlund's subtlety and plaintiveness.

There's not a lot of chemistry between Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and that's the biggest issue in the film.

...playing as an upgrade on American abroad comedy, Downhill offers some laughs that the original doesn’t, a National Lampoon’s Skiing Vacation with trash-talking sexed-up locals, toilet mishaps, and enough low-shots to offer some entertainment value…

We would all be much better off if the remake never happened and, as always, Julia Louis-Dreyfus deserves so much better.

Very slow beginning. And the entire premise as to why the wife/mother was so upset was a bit overwrought.

It wasn't as funny as the other movies Will Ferrell has done in the past. Felt like a pretty somber movie

Horrible. If I could vote lower than one I would. Who wants to see two A class comedians scream at each other in a failed marriage. Walked out.
