Critics Consensus

This story of a floundering shoe designer who returns home for a family tragedy gets lost in undeveloped plot lines and lackluster performances.

Elizabethtown [is] a tone-deaf, miscast and interminable romantic comedy from the usually beguiling Cameron Crowe.

The hero's nuclear family and kooky rural relatives are so sketchily conceived that none of the intended comedy works, and the balance of the movie is given over to one of Crowe's sugary romances.

The overriding feeling is that Crowe simply wanted to impress audiences with cuts from his personal music collection.

Crowe has a very talented cast at his disposal and, for the most part, uses them wisely.

I don’t know why this movie is rated so low. I’ve watched it at least 4 times and it just gets better each time. Great cast, great story line with several sub plots, phenomenal soundtrack. It really hits home and at the end you might have a happy tear in your eye.

I identified a bit with Drew's depression, and the homely nature of his family was just like my family with me after my antidepressant overdose. It's not the best movie, but I find it comforting how Drew's family is and how Claire is.

Elizabethtown is a heartfelt, charming film about finding unexpected moments of connection when life takes an unexpected turn. With its beautiful performances, memorable soundtrack, and genuine sense of warmth, the movie captures the messy, funny, and emotional journey of rediscovering yourself. It’s a story about family, love, second chances, and the small experiences that can change the way we see the world. Sweet, sincere, and quietly uplifting, Elizabethtown is a film that grows on you and leaves you with a smile.

With myopia and questionable characterizations, Elizabethtown proves to be a rather unfocused effort from Cameron Crowe.

I've probably watched this movie more than any other. It's a feel good movie from start to finish. Whenever I feel about ready to get on the elliptical I know it's time for Elizabethtown. I love Almost Famous, but this one is just as good and the best kept secret. The music is parfait. When Ryan Adams arrives I melt immediately. Solo road trips, a manic pixie dream girl and a magnificent shoe.
