What to Know

Critics Consensus

If it isn't quite as thought-provoking as the book, Ender's Game still manages to offer a commendable number of well-acted, solidly written sci-fi thrills.

Starship Troopers, Alien, Tron and Star Trek also make up the movie's DNA but the story - a provocative study about the morality of warfare and conflicts of leadership - injects something powerful and new into the familiar 'chosen one' plot trajectory. Go to Full Review

The battle scenes are spectacular but lifeless and hard to engage with. We're watching a cascade of computer-game imagery. Go to Full Review

It was a bit like standing in a room where someone is playing a video game on a screen and you're not actually taking part in it but you have to watch interminably this game being played and it's just really a bit boring. Go to Full Review

Ender’s Game is a fun, dramatic look that is different and unique for most sci-fi movies. While it follows the basic trope of alien invasion, it quickly turns into a moral dilemma that involves some heavy and complex themes. Go to Full Review

Not having read Card’s novel, I couldn’t say whether it was truly “unfilmable,” but what ends up on the screen is indeed “filmable” in that we’ve seen these narrative threads countless times before in science fiction cinema. Go to Full Review

A joyless video game experience, complete with levels of increasing difficulty and a main character who never really faces a true conflict. Go to Full Review

Geo @Geodetic Jan 19 A great rendition with too many creative revisions. Stick to the source material. See more Nigel S @Funkleberry Jan 18 The ho-hum RT scores reflect a ho-hum movie. The fact that it was all a simulation meant that the protagonists were never in any more danger than being in a video arcade, leading to a lame finish. Seemingly most of the messages in the book were tossed out like balast in a hot air balloon, leaving only hot air behind. Passed the time, but there are many better movies out there! See more TheKallse @SG546 Dec 28 The acting is ridiculous and the story is far-fetched. Brain torture. See more David B. Nov 29 Incredibly slow & boring, I gave up after 1 hour & 12 minutes. See more M4R10ooo S Nov 22 A criminally underrated sci-fi film with strong central performances, action and an amazing ending. See more Leaburn O Sep 25 I usually enjoy sci fi and here’s another decent one. Not enormous philosophical depth but enough to keep things interesting. A bit of a leadership guru’s wet dream.
