Critics Consensus

Thanks to a strong performance from Jake Gyllenhaal and smart direction from Denis Villeneuve, Enemy hits the mark as a tense, uncommonly adventurous thriller.

Gyllenhaal faces the tricky task of conveying the subtle differences of two men whose identities are thrown into flux. The result is his most nuanced performance since playing another sleuth caught out of his depth in Zodiac.

Enemy has morbid elegance to spare, which should guarantee it some long-term cult prestige.

Assessed on a level of tone and aesthetic, Villeneuve’s film is a stunning work. It is oppressive and unsettling, achieving Lynchian levels of discomfort and uncertainty.

Enemy is brimming with non-commercial bravado that borders on being confessional. Just as Hitchcock made manifest his voyeuristic and controlling proclivities, Villeneuve exposes his own conflicted feelings towards women and monogamy.

Jake Gyllenhaal delivered. Everyone else involved delivered confusion. The yellow filter was a crime and the CGI was fighting for its life. The plot had potential but it landed like a fart, it felt flat. Don’t get me started on the unnecessary sex scenes? Good movie though

Original. Unsettling. Solid acting and story. David Lynch lite.

The acting was great, but the story with the wife and girlfriend flagged a little. It confused me, especially that bit about the ring toward the end.

Terrible movie. It made no sense. It was slow and never got good.

This has got to be the worst movie I have ever watched. It was slow, boring and stupid. A complete waste of time. Save yourself a couple hours of your life and don't even put it on.
