Critics Consensus

Bravely updating Bresson with brilliant results, EO is a donkey-driven drama that'll stubbornly stick with you long after the credits roll.

Mychal Dymek’s superb cinematography lends distinction to the film and, combined with the director’s strikingly original visual concepts, including some scenes representing the donkey’s eye view, makes for a visually impressive experience.

The film, by Polish master Jerzy Skolimowski, is both moving and puzzling, a story about an innocent done in a style that doesn’t always have the same innocence.

At 84, the Polish director is doing some of his finest work, and “EO” is a highlight in a long, bumpy, but rich career.

There isn’t really a suitable metric to judge the performances of donkeys – six Sardinian asses play the titular beast – but I was truly moved by their collective on-screen star power.

With a creative story and a deeply endearing protagonist with whom we quickly empathize, it manages to offer a sharp critique of society and its relationship with animals. [Full Review in Spanish]

Skolimowski’s Cannes Jury Prize winner is an outlandish tale with an unhappy ending packed with a surrealist twist that does not water down the Polish director’s cri de coeur on behalf of mistreated animals

Slow, boring, no plot, no point. Hated it.

Beautiful, heartbreaking movie of a donkeys life. EO goes from one terrible situation to the next, being mistreated and neglected, ending in a line of cattle headed for the slaughterhouse. Many beautiful scenes of Poland.

What a powerful film. A fascinating portrayal with parallels between the animal kingdom and human experiences. Difficult to watch at times and sometimes the visual effects are a little dizzying. But EO is a beautiful creature who shows resilience, persistence and humanity in the face of difficult circumstances. Captivating story, stunning scenery and a tragic ending. Thoughtful filmmaking so glad I was able to see this film.

Seeing the world through the eyes of a donkey? What's not to like? EO z ever loses his donkey nature for a Disney fantasy or outcome. He simply experiences the world as it is, where cruelty and beauty love side by side. The cinematography was on point too!

Traumatizing. My daughter and I were distraught over the events in the movie and the incredibly sad and disturbing end. I DO NOT recommend this movie if you care for animals.

There is a lot of cruelty to animals depicted in this film. Very dark and upsetting for me.
