Peter J @RT56025137 Jul 20 Neil Armstrong was an amazing man. The movie does a great job of highlighting Armstrong's biography "First Man". One big issue with the movie is the director including Gil Scot-Heron's poem. The poem was totally out of place, it would have ruined the movie but it is more important to focus on Armstrong's achievements along with the thousands of people, of ALL races, who contributed to one of the greatest accomplishments of all time. I'm sure it looks fantastic on the big screen, but that doesn't translate to the smaller screens and with the absence of any strong narrative, this is a slow, slow ride. It is much more than that. It gives an insight into this very complex man and his motivations for going to the moon! He was after all an extraordinary man but yet only a man with hidden feelings! He had a tremendous loss in his daughter's death and yet he used his grief into this massive achievement. This film is not an easy watch but I have done this review after watching the film for the 3rd time. It is a slow burn but once you get it, it just overwhelms you with emotion. It is a beautiful film and great acting throughout. His wife must have been a strong woman to deal with Neil and their pain and suffering in silence! I love this film and it truly is like no other film of this Genre. Well shot, directed and acted and conveyed to us the watcher! Please give a chance this won't disappoint. The cinematography is truly beautiful, the cast delivers excellent performances, and this is Universal Pictures' best project of 2018. See more Haseeb A @iamhaseebaslam Mar 30 Did not know this was a Damien Chazelle film going in and honestly that made it hit even harder when I saw his name in the credits. It does not feel like the polished, award bait space drama you might expect. It feels raw and intimate and deeply personal. The family drama at the centre of it is everything. Ryan Gosling plays Neil Armstrong with this quiet restraint that could easily read as cold but actually just feels real, and the domestic weight of what these astronauts and their families carried comes through in every scene. The editing inside the ships is something else entirely. It is chaotic and claustrophobic and genuinely puts you in the headspace of what these men must have actually felt strapped into a metal capsule being launched into space. Claire Foy is exceptional throughout. Knew her from The Crown but this is a completely different register, and she absolutely delivers. See more Read all reviews
