Slow-witted Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) has never thought of himself as disadvantaged, and thanks to his supportive mother (Sally Field), he leads anything but a restricted life. Whether dominating on the gridiron as a college football star, fighting in Vietnam or captaining a shrimp boat, Forrest inspires people with his childlike optimism. But one person Forrest cares about most may be the most difficult to save -- his childhood love, the sweet but troubled Jenny (Robin Wright).

Critics Consensus

Tom Hanks' rigorously earnest performance keeps Forrest Gump sincere even when it gets glib with American history, making for a whimsical odyssey of debatable wisdom but undeniable heart.

Forrest Gump is Hollywood film-making at its most corn-fed, sucrose-enriched and calorific; you’ll need a sweet tooth for it.

Zemeckis has made a fast movie about a slow hero; he transforms Forrest's daffy misconceptions into lyrical flights. Forrest Gump has a softer, more delicate touch and a richer current of feeling than any of the other holy-innocent movies.

Hanks' performance [is] a triumph of dignity, decency, and warm-hearted humor... Even more than his Oscar-winning achievement in Philadelphia, this is a role that will be remembered as long as people care about great acting.

It isn’t perfect, but still mostly charming.30 years past “Run Forrest Run”, the biggest takeaway is that I wanted to follow that leaf at the beginning. It is insignificant, but such an iconic shot.

Forrest Gump works primarily because of Tom Hanks’ intuitive performance in the lead role and director Robert Zemeckis’ wizardry behind the camera.

A beautiful movie that tells someone’s life in the most interesting way possible. Also makes it feel like a history documentary to, and that’s what’s so amazingly different compared to other movies.

A heartfelt and beautifully made film with an unforgettable performance from Tom Hanks. Forrest Gump blends comedy, romance, drama, and history into a story that is both entertaining and emotional. The characters are memorable, the soundtrack is fantastic, and the message about life and perseverance really stays with you. A timeless classic.
