When an inner-city Detroit foster mother (Fionnula Flanagan) is murdered in a botched holdup, four of her now-grown adopted children suspect it was no random killing. Rising musician Jack (Garrett Hedlund), former-Marine Angel (Tyrese Gibson), hotheaded hockey player Bobby (Mark Wahlberg) and settled-down husband and father Jeremiah (André Benjamin) go on the hunt for neighborhood criminal kingpin Victor Sweet (Chiwetel Ejiofor) while being trailed themselves by the local beat cops.

Critics Consensus

Despite striking a believable rapport among its principal actors, Four Brothers overwhelms with ultra-violent, vigilante-glorifying action and devolves into too many fractured, insubstantial thematic directions.

Swiftly dissolves into a litany of brutally sadistic acts knotted together by a feeble whodunnit plot.

An over-violent and under-sincere story that strays from justice past revenge and into mindless vigilantism.

It's rare that you catch an acclaimed mainstream filmmaker dropping all pretenses and giving in to the desire to make pure pulp.

A usually sharp script, a firecracker turn from Chiwetel Ejiofor and a decent amount of suspense and surprise. There are worse directors than John Singleton who have switched focus to B-pictures with the right amount of substance.

Singleton. bereft of serious ideas if not visceral talent. now appears to have nothing more to offer than plenty of bang for your buck.

Dynamite chemistry between Marky Mark, Tyrese, Andre 3000, and Garrett Hedlund, delivering heart and one-liners galore. John Singleton’s direction is gritty and stylish, the action scenes are wonderfully shot, and the 70’s soundtrack is a knockout. 10/10

It is not your typical routine crime film. It brings a distinct grit and energy that helps it stand out from standard revenge stories. The storyline builds up nicely and leads to a really satisfying ending..

A story about siblings who share the bond of a mother, not blood. Family isn’t always DNA. Morally incorrect to many, but definitely enjoyed it myself.
