A fascinating combination of science and romance, and particularly when the balance is in the romance's favor. Go to Full Review

at once a star-crossed romance, an allegory of (class) discord and (musical) harmony, and a theological investigation into nature and nurture, free will and determinism. It's out there, alright - and there's nothing else out there quite like it. Go to Full Review

While the detached, deadpan tone and occasionally stilted acting might leave some viewers flat, there's no doubting the fierce intelligence behind this admirable puzzle box of a movie. Go to Full Review

Fisher creates a fully-realized new world in FREQUENCIES, and he does it with words and concepts instead of computer graphics and creatures. Go to Full Review

A film to warm the cockles of your geeky heart, an incredibly ambitious and profoundly provocative science fiction drama about ideas that require no FX to sell them. Go to Full Review

Equally provocative and captivating. It has more imagination and intelligence than all of the Hollywood films in recent memory combined. Go to Full Review

jason l @Jasonismynameandilluseit Mar 16 For some this movie will go right over their heads. It brings a few deep scientific ideas or theories up. the question of do we have free will or are we just complex biological machines. even the idea of frequencies is sort of a reference to things like string theory and waveforms in quantum physics. Quantum fluctuations and nature versus nurture. Also, some philosophical ideas thrown in. Music is just a metaphor for how there seems to be an underlying code for the universe that balances everything just right for existence to exist. ;) All in all, a very nice little hidden gem of a movie. See more Xena S 08/31/2023 Interesting ideas, no luck in putting them together It has some interesting ideas, but their delivery lacks cohesion and step-by-step development, which in my view loses exactly the viewer it's meant to attract - the thinking, curious type. This is what we read in Wikipedia: "Zak discovers with Theo that sound waves, when combined with gibberish two-syllable words, are able to temporarily raise one's frequency. They create a cell phone device which, based on the environment, is able to determine which words can raise one's frequency." This is not what we see on the screen. We can just about figure out that the combination of sound waves and meaningless words can cause a fluctuation (we're still left to guess that the fluctuation means Zak's frequency is raised), but the creation of the cell phone device is left completely outside the narrative. We are expected to do the guess work every step of the way, but there's simply not enough material to arrive at determinant conclusions. And this is coming from a director who decided to resurrect the idea of scientific determinism, which had been buried at the turn of the 20th century. It totally makes sense that every human being should have a frequency, since every particle is also a wave (in itself not a deterministic concept), but the question what to make of it has not been answered with this effort. See more 02/21/2022 A modern masterpiece Some films teach you so much about life, but Frequencies breaks the barrier, it's so thought provoking, it is so original and challenges the very fabric of life, I was confused for much of the film but everything came together at the conclusion! See more 01/08/2021 Cute love story, low budget but intriguing and well acted See more 12/12/2020 I found this movie to be excellent. There's something wonderfully refreshing about it...innovative...thought provoking, with nuances of humour (right down to the MI5 men) and a lovely, innocent quirkiness and innocence which is so typically British and such a change from Hollywood-type offerings. Brilliant acting from absolutely all the actors with superb casting and excellently shot. As others have remarked, this movie doesn't need special effects, gung-ho machismo and car chases. Even when (in only one scene) sidearms are produced, it's humorous and unthreatening This is a movie which I will watch again See more 11/14/2020 Respectfully, the "100%" rating this movie presently has on RT is a malfunction, undeserved, a mis-rating. The movie wants to allude to something interesting. But it is very thinly drawn. At moments it sort of touches on some interesting stuff. But overall the symbolic meaning is not well-thought out and hardly going anywhere. I respect anyone who tries to make a movie about trippy thoughtful stuff. But unfortunately this movie is more an empty gesture that wants to be thoughtful about something, more than it is actually thoughtful about anything, it seems to me. See more Read all reviews
