Michael S May 12 This is one of my favorite films even though it is very strange and flaw it is an exceptional 50's film noir from the mind of Tennessee Williams. The author actually wrote different versions of this play and there was a Broadway revival in 1989 that was made into a film in 1990, Orpheus Descending, staring Vanessa Redgrave. In interesting to view both versions and see how different directors handle the same material in their respective time periods. Anyway, don't let the poor reviews keep you from watching this unusual film as the performances are amazing by everyone in the cast and you will have certain scenes stuck in your movie memory forever. See more r96 s Feb 9 'The Fugitive Kind' is just a bit too slow for me, I almost did enjoy it mind you. Marlon Brando and Anna Magnani are the stars and I did buy into their relationship by the conclusion; which, by the way, goes from 0 to 60 real quick! It is a solid ending though. What precedes just meanders a little too much, for my liking at least. There were periods where I was locked on to events onscreen, though the down moments were quite noticeable too, unfortunately, and when all is said and done the latter probably outweighs the former. See more Lauren D 10/07/2022 A Tennessee Williams work, based on Orpheus Descending and, like all his work, it's dark and steamy, disturbing and heartbreaking. It may come as a surprise to those watching the film for the first time just how modern its themes are. There are those who say Lumet's direction was off-key, but I disagree. It's a slow burn, filled with foreshadowing. The tragic ending is inevitable from the opening scene. Marlon Brando is perfectly cast as the still-waters-run-deep loner with a sexuality he can neither hide or escape despite his (at least in the beginning of the film) strange innocence. Is he dangerous, a kind of sexual demon-savant? Or a holy philosophical fool? Joanne Woodward is an acting revelation - profoundly vulnerable, broken, and alluring at the same time. Anna Magnani's performance of repressed rage and hurt will haunt you. Maureen Stapleton is a dollop of magical purity. In short, be warned, but watch it. "You've been a witnesss, and you know."
