This pseudo-Victorian thriller is more enjoyable than one might expect. Bergman is, intermittently, genuinely moving. Go to Full Review

Teddy B 1d It does, at times, feel like a B-grade 'Rebecca' in its pseudo-Gothic atmosphere and what appears to be the build-up of the mental deterioration of the female character before another plot is revealed, but George Cukor's tight direction and personality over 'Gaslight' makes it a solid success. Ingrid Bergman's character is written to be a great deal too stupid and wishy-washy even for her time, which is my main problem, but she manages to make it work within a story that you can tell definitely began on the stage. See more Maksim S @MaksimusMovies Nov 2 Tension, Suspense, and Unforgettable Intrigue. Gaslight is a masterclass in psychological suspense, with every frame steeped in unease and meticulous craftsmanship. Ingrid Bergman delivers a quietly powerful performance, capturing terror and resilience with haunting precision, while the story’s slow-burning manipulation keeps viewers on edge. Elegant, suspenseful, and brilliantly acted, Gaslight remains a timeless thriller that proves tension and atmosphere can be far more chilling than overt horror. See more Kyle M Sep 19 A dated psychological thriller that benefited low standards that’s progressed into a relevant argument of manipulative abuse, pulling off a surprising observative character study regarding mental fragility that was decently manifested tackling our sympathetic paranoia through Ingrid Bergman’s form but finds elliptical illogic through Charles Boyer’s unconvincing posture. (B) See more Curtis M Sep 1 Ingrid Bergman delivers an outstanding performance as Paula, a woman gradually manipulated into madness by Gregory, played masterfully by Charles Boyer. It’s easy to see why Bergman earned multiple awards for her role, as her portrayal is both nuanced and deeply compelling. “Gaslight” is remarkably clever, filled with memorable lines, sharp performances from the entire cast, and a tension that builds beautifully over time. Everything comes together seamlessly by the end, with Paula turning the tables on Gregory and finally reclaiming her freedom in a finale that feels both rewarding and unforgettable. See more John G Aug 8 Simply put - THIS IS A GREAT MOVIE! A flawless cast led by Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer in a convincing romantic tragedy, rooted in a mysteriously haunting compulsion that is brilliantly resolved in the end. A thriller that relies on no cheap shots or bombast. Every aspect of this movie is admirably crafted. A genuine rarity. See more Shari M Feb 23 While I despise being scared and detest horror movies, this film had me riveted to the end. Bergman's acting is seamless and genuine, subtle and deep, and everything around her fascinating. The story is well-concocted - (much improved from the 1940 version four years earlier, though that version has a few interesting quirks - MGM's 1944 version here is vastly superior) and the through line knits all things together to a satisfying and interesting ending. Yes, it's dark and creepy but entirely compelling - the I-must-find-out trumping any fright. See more Read all reviews
