After saving New York City from a ghost attack, the Ghostbusters -- a team of spirit exterminators -- is disbanded for demolishing parts of the city during the battle. But when Ghostbuster Peter Venkman learns that spirits have taken an interest in his son, the men launch a rogue ghost-chasing mission. The quest quickly goes awry, landing them in court. But when the ghosts turn on the judge, he issues an order allowing the Ghostbusters to get back to work.

Critics Consensus

Thanks to the cast, Ghostbusters 2 is reasonably amusing, but it lacks the charm, wit, and energy of its predecessor.

Ghostbusters II is a comfy experience for all concerned -- easy bucks for the producers, easier yucks for the consumers; nothing ventured, money gained.

Murray's character sits firmly at the center of the film, and makes it part of a series, rather than just another sequel.

The sequel is, on the whole, a fairly mechanical spook show, filled with grinning ghosts that are definitely ghoulish but hardly menacing.

While the film fall considerably short of the funny and fresh original, it does have its moments and some good special effects.

[A] highly professional, machine-tooled clone of a movie that couldn't be bettered.

This movie gets a fair amount of hate from Ghostbusters fans, but I actually really enjoy it. I think the cast is still great and has great chemistry, and I’ve always enjoyed the pink slime and Vigo the Carpathian. I also love Dana’s involvement in the film, and the way they brought back Tully. And I love those classic, 80s special effects, especially for the Proton Packs. Overall, I think this is a worthy sequel to a great movie. The cast is great, the villain is cool, the soundtrack is really good, and the VFX still look great. If you enjoyed the first Ghostbusters, you should give this movie a fair, unbiased shot.

As the second installment, I feel it’s faster-paced and fresher. The plot is very accessible, and the aesthetic is stunning.

Surprisingly this sequel outdoes the original with a more cohesive vision & story that all work much better. A fun possession horror comedy that leans into the genre blend in mostly successful ways. The characters are done in a more compelling way with better cast chemistry. Murray delivers some actually insanely funny lines that make me burst out laughing. It’s goofy & dumb but it doesn’t feel nonsensical.
