As Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) ages, he finds that being the head of the Corleone crime family isn't getting any easier. He wants his family out of the Mafia, but the mob kingpin (Eli Wallach) isn't eager to let one of the most powerful and wealthy families go legit. Making matters even worse is Michael's nephew, Vincent (Andy Garcia). Not only does Vincent want a piece of the Corleone family's criminal empire, but he also wants Michael's daughter, Mary (Sofia Coppola).

Critics Consensus

The final installment of The Godfather saga recalls its predecessors' power when it's strictly business, but underwhelming performances and confused tonality brings less closure to the Corleone story.

The Godfather films have set home-video standards for decades, and that trend continues with Paramounts astonishing 4K restorations.

The Godfather Part III becomes a fitting end: a bitter requiem, a meditation on failure, and a prayer cast to heaven without hope of an answer. [Full review in Spanish]

"The Godfather Part IlI" is grand, ambitious, full of passion and good acting, and re-teams several of the players on both sides of the camera who helped make parts I and II the cinematic events they were.

This film, while being the last installment, has its ups and downs. I cannot say it is totally bad, as it does allow a clear transition from the previous parts to this movie. I heard some critics didn't like Sofia Coppola's acting in this movie, but I would be more lenient here because she was young and did her best to capture that teenage-adult desire to be loved, even with a huge family behind her. What was disappointing was that, despite how long the movie is, there wasn't enough action involving the mafia. It is more of a story that expresses the difficulty of love. The cast is strong, but it contrasts sharply with Part 1, where not a second felt boring. The cast is strong, but the story could have been stronger. Points are given for trying to maintain consistent presentation, which Coppola did in all of them.

It lacks the cinematic perfection of the first two - Sofia Coppola is miscast and Tom Hagen’s absence hurts the dynamic. However, Willis’s cinematography beautifully shifts into a decaying, golden autumnal light. Michael’s desperate, agonizing quest for redemption, punctuated by his silent scream on the opera steps after Mary's death, provides the heartbreaking closure he deserved.

Too often, this movie is compared to the first 2 films in the trilogy, leading to poor reviews. Yes, it's not as good as the others, but those movies are flawless. The Godfather part 3 was nominated for Best Picture and is a great conclusion to the series. Very underrated.
