When a powerful satellite system falls into the hands of Alec Trevelyan, AKA Agent 006 (Sean Bean), a former ally-turned-enemy, only James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) can save the world from an awesome space weapon that -- in one short pulse -- could destroy the earth! As Bond squares off against his former compatriot, he also battles Trevelyan's stunning ally, Xenia Onatopp (Famke Janssen), an assassin who uses pleasure as her ultimate weapon.

Critics Consensus

The first and best Pierce Brosnan Bond film, GoldenEye brings the series into a more modern context, and the result is a 007 entry that's high-tech, action-packed, and urbane.

There’s a fair bit to enjoy here, although perhaps it’s best experienced on TV over Christmas in a Quality Street stupor. Go to Full Review

James Bond, the British spy with a taste for the high life and a license to kill, comes back in surprisingly hardy and supple form. Go to Full Review

Sean Russell Oct 6 a pleasant blast from the past with outstanding picture and sound 4k bluray upgrade quality making it feel like it was filmed this year. Finally getting to experience in the theatre first time ever having not been able to in my early childhood. Great way to celebrate the 30th anniversary on JB 007 day! See more Mando Oct 6 A great old school 007 film See more Jeff J Oct 6 Been watching this movie since I saw it in the theater during its original 1995 run See more Jacob B @JB3.0 8h Bringing 007 to the blockbuster age in style, GoldenEye might be one of the more introspective films in the franchise but on the whole, it succeeds at what it sets out to do: showing that there is a place for James Bond in the post-Cold War landscape. Featuring a perfectly cast Pierce Brosnan, great villains, fun action scenes + breathtaking stunts (Casino Royale, from the same director, would fare better regarding the former, however), a compelling story and a good blend of humour (I certainly wasn't expecting THAT to be 007's introduction to this Bond Girl), suspense and even nightmare fuel. There are some silly moments but those shouldn't distract you from the fact that this is still a fun film that started Brosnan's tenure on the right foot, revitalised the franchise and may have even been responsible for the spy genre making a proper comeback. Still think Martin Campbell did a better job with Casino Royale but that could just be me being biased since Daniel Craig was my first 007. See more keven Q @kevenquinlan Mar 16 Rewatching all the bonds- Though I grew up to Moore and remember Connery from TV- Brosnan is probably my favorite. He just embodies Everything you would imagine James Bond to be, and that includes Craig, who is probably my 2nd favorite but has the benefit of being Bond in cinema modernity. I really like ALL of Brosnan's movies, this is my favorite though b/c of the video game= which is also my favorite. There are no Bond movies you shouldn't have in your collection.
