I could have watched several more hours of it, which is something I could essentially achieve by watching Downton Abbey, but I feel much more engaged in Altman’s care.

I don't think I've ever seen the British class system of the 1930s so artfully dissected. It's all the more remarkable when you consider that Altman is a 76-year-old American -- albeit a Southern gent. A huge, huge treat.

Before there was Mansfield there was Gosford. Charles Dance's best movie, or the best movie in which he makes an appearance? Either way. An impressive upstairs/downstairs story. There's just one problem. Whereas the original TV series of Upstairs Downstairs was phenomenal, and I often think I should watch it again, very little of Gosford Park stays in the memory. I can't even remember how funny it was, or if the butler did it, as the saying goes, or was in fact anything untoward done. I just remember the costumes, the refinement, the snobbishness. And Kristen Scott Thomas saying she was 'bored to sobs'. So, very well acted and impressive production of a story I've completely forgotten/

A wonderfully witty whodunit that deliberately sidesteps the genre's usual payoff. The mystery ultimately takes a back seat to Robert Altman's sharp, amusing critique of class and privilege, making the journey far more rewarding than the solution.

So many fine actors doing such fine acting. The dialogue was witty, and the story had lots of clever twists. It was a beautiful print, and the film is extremely well crafted in every respect, from the costumes and sets to the editing and music. This was our third viewing, so some of it was familiar, but that didn’t detract at all.
