Lenny Feder moves his family back to his hometown to be with his friends, but he finds -- what with old bullies, new bullies, party crashers and more -- that he hasn't left the crazy life behind in Los Angeles. Lenny's friends must also cope with their own challenges: Eric must face his ultimate fear; Kurt has gone back to work as a cable repairman; and Marcus learns that he has an 18-year-old son.

Critics Consensus

While it's almost certainly the movie event of the year for filmgoers passionate about deer urine humor, Grown Ups 2 will bore, annoy, and disgust audiences of nearly every other persuasion.

Sandler's films have always been stupid, but the early stuff is pretty harmless; here the jokes almost always come at the expense of someone else, the kind of needless bullying one expects of a YouTube comment section.

[A] slothful, indulgent sequel that sees a once-great screen comedian hit self-inflicted Sandlergeddon.

Rob Schneider, the butt of many jokes in the first Grown-Ups, is nowhere to be seen. Salma Hayek, as Lenny's wife, looks understandably tense and irritable throughout.

However, strip away the rare moments of humility and championing of small town life and you're left with what is simply a series of sexist and scatological vignettes...

This film incited more facepalms and head-shakes than laughs, and the script feels like something Sandler could have scribbled on the palm of his hand.

Grown Ups 2 won't please a good majority of the film critics, but it's not a film for the film critics.

Grown Ups 2 doubles down on the chaos and delivers pure, unfiltered slapstick comedy. Adam Sandler and the crew—Kevin James, Chris Rock, and David Spade—reunite on home turf for a summer day packed with endless laughs, wild gags, and non-stop nostalgia. From a rogue deer breaking into the house to absolute total mayhem at a retro 80s party, the film leans fully into ridiculous physical humor and rapid-fire banter. Add in memorable cameos from Shaq and Taylor Lautner as an overly aggressive fraternity guy, and you get non-stop, ridiculous fun. Lighthearted, endlessly quotable, and hugely entertaining. 5/5 stars—a laugh-out-loud sequel.

Grown Ups 2 still has some easy comfort-watch appeal because Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, and David Spade remain relaxed together. Even without Rob Schneider, the central group knows exactly what kind of goofy, low-effort comedy they are making, and their friendship is still the main reason any of it works. Moving the story into one chaotic day around town gives the sequel a different rhythm from the lake-house setup. The school, car wash, dance recital, house party, and neighborhood scenes create a loose sketch-comedy structure, with Shaquille O’Neal, Steve Buscemi, Nick Swardson, and others adding occasional bursts of energy. The problem is that the movie barely has a story. A lot of jokes miss, and the film feels like random scenes stitched together with very little momentum. It has its moments and a harmless summer mood, but it is more lazy than satisfying.
